1486 steering

The steering on my 1486 is becoming a worry driving on the road. The front tires get to wobbling back and forth in unison. I am wondering if it has something to do with the seals in the steering cylinder since the pitmans and ball joints appear to be tight. It is hard to tell driving down the road. My main concern is that something will break driving down the road and I will end up someplace that I do not want to be. Even turning on rough ground in the field there appears to be a lot of slop but at least if something would break there I am going slow enough to avert disaster. Thanks for any suggestions.

Sounds like the trunnion , bushing and pin need replacing . They have a kit to repair this . Get undwer the ft. end and wiggle the cylinder and you will see what is loose . Takes about 2 hours to fix .

Check your steering arms on your spindles. The splines become worn & let the tires flop. There are undersized arms available so you don,t need to replace the spindle unless really shot.

I agree about the steering arms. My 1466 was having the same issue. Removed the arms and the splines in the arms were razor thin. Luckily, the shaft was fine so all I had to do was replace the arms. I also replaced the tie rods.

That took out a lot of the slop but I still see a front end rebuild in the horizon. Not surprising, though, as I have 1000lbs of weight on the front which I'm sure takes its toll on the front end.

I had that wobbling on my 2606 going over rough ground. Raised the front end up and found the 3 bolts in the bottom holding the trunion in were loose. Tightening helped some. Since I was having steering problems anyway and I could see the rod in the steering cylinder moving back and forth with the wheels, I rebuilt the steering cylinder. That stopped the wobbling. When I bought the steering cylinder kit, the parts guy talked me into buying new bushings for the trunion pins. When I got it apart, the original bushings fit tight on both the pin and in the housing. Left the old ones in there. If the rod in the steering cylinder wobbles back and forth also, then that is where I'd start. Hydraulic psi should hold it solid. If it doesn't move, I'd look somewhere else. If those trunion bolts are loose, you may want to use loctite. Let us know what you find out.
