Looking at a 1086

Hi guys, I'm looking at a tractor with cab to run my baler. I found a really sharp looking 1086 that's advertised in "perfect condition" It has TA, AC, new tires and 4100 hrs. It looks really sharp in the pictures. It's really more tractor than I need but I could make it work. He's asking $20,000. Is that a decent price or is he high on it. Thanks for the help. Dan

that's not a lot of hours for a 1086. even so, nice 1086s are usually under 10k, maybe 12k for special ones. a lot of them are in the $7-9k range.
i presume you are using it on a big baler... i sure wouldn't try my 1086 on my small square baler. its way too big and clumsy.

Dan around here in Iowa it takes a darn good one to fetch $16,000.

But I would not sell either one of mine for $16,000, cause a newer model to replace them in the same condition, would be in the $30,000+ range.

Get him to come down a thousand or 2 and buy it.

Thanks guys. I thought it was a little pricey. Dang thing looked almost new, but still not worth that to me. I have a John Deere 467 round baler I want to work. I need a cab tractor. Sure gets hot and dusty in North Texas. I would like at least 70-80 PTO horsepower for this baler. What would be a good International model for me? Thanks, Dan...

baling is a pleasure with my 826 hydro. however, the only cabs available for it would be add on, like year-a-round or hiniker. better than nothing, but not like an 86 series cab. ideal for you might be a 186 hydro(some around), or 3488 hydro(scarce as hens teeth). if you go with a gear drive, make sure you get a hydraulic assist clutch. i had to bale with my 1456 when the 826 was down, and my left ankle ached by the end of the day from holding the clutch down while the bale was finishing.

I am sure that you dont have as many to choose from down in texas as we do up here in the dairy state, but in wisconsin that would be at least $5000.00 over priced.

I saw a really mint, new rubber 886 go for 14 k two years ago! That;s when I quit bidding. A really nice one like that is worth at least 16K.
Will he take 17 for it?

Look at at a 1066, more than enough HP to do what you want and I picked mine up, here in NW IA, for $7300 with a loader. Tractor was in average condition with 4300 hrs, had a cab with heat and A/C which I don't really need, the A/C that is.

Dad's 1086 has 9500 hours on it and needs paint - neighbor offered him $13k for it last summer and Dad just laughed. Said it would take about $16k before he would seriously consider selling, even though we don't really need it anymore.

I'll bet Dad would give $20k for that one... where's it located, exactly?

Hi Steve. Here is the link for the tractor for you and anyone else who would like to peek at it. I would like to hear what everyone else thinks about it. I haven't given up on it yet, but if any of y'all want to pursue it, go for it. If it's still there if I decide to buy it, then the Good Lord saved it for me. Commerce is just Northeast of Dallas. I talked to the owner today and he won't budge off the price. In fact, he stated he was considering raising it. I asked him the year and he said somewhere in the mid '80s. I can get a 90 horse JD for the same dollars and it's a 2002, but has about 6500 hrs. I only put about 150 hrs. per year on mine, so this many hours shouldn't bother me. Please let me know what y'all think. Thanks, Dan.

For the same money, even I would buy the JD - what's the model number on it?

I see that 1086 has no duals, that should lower the price as they have too much power for singles if you are actually pulling with them.

Two things about your conversation with the owner bother me:

1. "Mid '80s." 1086s were made from 1977-1981. Tells me he doesn't know what he has, or isn't being honest.
2. He's considering raising the price. Tells me that he's not being honest.

I'm with you mkirsch. If they weren't even made in the mid '80s then I wouldn't believe another word out of this guy's mouth. I hate liars!!!!! I talked to my IH dealer today and he said a good 1086 should go for about half that. I think I would give more than half for a good one, but, not $20,000.
