M Farmall alternator to generator/Hood question

I have a M that someone has converted from a generator system to and alternator. When they did so they cut out a hole in the corner of the hood where the circled M is stuck. Can this altnerator be mounted to where the hood doesn't have to be cut? And, if so does anyone know where I can buy another hood? Thanks, Jackey

There's gotta be thousands of M's/Super M's out there with alternators hidden away under the hood. So yes - there's plenty of room to tuck an alternator up under the hood.

Can't help you on source for a replacement hood. You might try at your local old iron boneyard. But bring your checkbook(!)

However a good body man should be able to patch your existing hood. My Super M came to me with a big chunk of the hood missing where an alternator had been hung. After repositioning the alternator I had a sheet metal guy patched it for a modest charge. Now from the outside you cannot tell the hood had have ever been cut.

Most electrical shops have an adapter bracket that will allow your alternator to fit. Use a small motorola or delco alt, single wire works the best. You can also get comlete adapter kits through the tractor parts section of this web site. part # IHCALTM
a very easy install

Done every day!!!
both pictures, and Delco SI10 I (and others recommend the 3 wire system. It charges from the Idle setting, does not drain the battery when the tractor is not in use, and is less headache. JimN

If you want a tight fit, try putting a Delco 10SI under the hood of a Cub. It'll fit, no need to cut anything.

Look in your local yellow pages for the nearest tractor salvage yard. If you live anywhere near a farm, there is probably a salvage yard within 100 miles. You're not going to find "Tractor Hoods R Us." Shipping will be abominable on an M hood, so even if you have to drive a little.

The made over 250,000 Ms, so hoods will be plentiful and relatively inexpensive.

I fitted a 10SI Delco to a M last summer. to avoid the tight fit / belt adjustment problem. We built the alternator bracket with 2 inch long slots where it bolts to the engine, so the alternator could be moved straight up to adjust the belt. Works well and no need to run the alternator into either valve cover or hood.

It's all in how you build the bracket and how short a belt you use. Lots of them are hidden under the hood. I have a couple hoods but they are not perfect. You might do just as well to find a junk hood close to home and fit the piece back in.

What I did was to flip over the old bracket, angle pointing up ward. lightly bolt the bracket in place bolting through the back hole of the bracket to the front hole on motor. I then tack welded a tail on the back pointing towards the driver about three inches long. Once drilled and finish welded every thing lines up nice. It still uses the original belt lenght. This sets the alternator quite abit higher in the hood and no cutting on the hood.

I was at a show last summer and my H was one of 3 H or Ms I saw that still had generators in them. Saw several H that had cut hoods but an alternator will fit right in on an M.and I did see some under the hood on Hs too. My M has an alternator although if I was going to keep it I would put it back the way it used to be. The hood on my M was not cut when they put the alt in it.

The previous owner of your M was probaly like Dad he thought pretty is nice but pretty will not pull no plow in other words he puy function ahead of looks.

My m also has a sticking out alternator when I bought. The hood was not cut out, and somehow the fact that the hood touched the alternator would make the tractor quit every 15 minutes of so until I jump started it again. I finally figured it did not have the problem with the hood off. I've been tempted to cut out the hood, but once I have enough time, I will just remount the alternator.
