Silly Bull, Pic

Went out to feed the cows yesterday, and in his hurry to get that one flake of alfalfa that was juuuust barely out of reach, he got his head stuck between the bars on the outside of the feeder, and the ones that angle down inside. He was still breathing fine, so I left him hopin he'd sort it out himself. Well, after a few hours he was still there. Tried pushin his head down where the space was wider... no luck... Went back just before dark, he was gettin a little fussy, and decided I'd better help him out. Tried picking up the feeder with the loader to help, no luck. Ended up dragging the generator and sawzall out and cuttin the bar off. He was glad to be out, none the worse for wear, but a bit thirsty. He wasn't first in line at the feeder this morning.

We're fortunate to have a good agricultural fair in the neighborhood -- horse and ox pullin', sheepdogs, . . . I remember some years ago goin' by the cattle stables and comin' upon a stir outside the stall of one of the pullin' oxes. He'd managed to get his head and horns outside the top of the door on his stall, but the crowd collected when he had trouble pullin' his head back in. I watched for a minute and saw that everybody was trying to push the one horn up into the corner of the upper half of the door that would let him back in, and that it wasn't working. They all had good intentions, so I didn't get into giving them he11, but I did make my way through with some air of authority so that they'd get out of my way. I talked to him for a sec to calm him down a little. Then, instead of pushing up to steer his horn through the door, I pulled down on it so that when he resisted he did the pulling up and got back into the stall.

I did consider that. But, there's a few dozen of those feeders around the valley, and this one has been in service for a few years with no incident till now. Its easy enough to keep an eye on the few cows this outfit runs. The bull will be back in seclusion here shortly, and he's the only one on with a noggin big enough to cause a problem.
