Magneto on 1944 W-4 - No spark?

Hello all, until now I've never had much reason or opportunity to mess around with a magneto. I'm now trying to get a very original '44 W-4 running again and have no spark. First off the mag is turning and the impulse appears to be working (theres an audible click and just as I get close to checking the point gap the cam jumps forward). I quickly cleaned the points with some emery cloth and removed the wire going to the ignition switch. With this done I cannot get it to jump a spark however if I hold the coil wire I get a moderate kick from it :) To the best of my knowledge it's easily 40 years since this tractor last ran. Any suggestions or places I can go to find more info on magnetos would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sam

Are you sure the switch for grounding out the mag is in the run position? You need to make sure the points are set at .013" and are shiny. Use some 320 wet or dry. You should have a hot blue spark every time it fires. Could have a weak coil. The magman in NY rebuilds these mags. Send him an email and ask his opinion. It may need rebuilding do to its age. Hal

PS: If you decide to have it rebuilt make sure you make a sketch where the rotor is pointing before you pull the mag. THEN DON'T MOVE THE ENGINE until you have the mag installed. Place the rotor in the same postion as your sketch.

Thanks for the help. Just eyeballing the points they are set a trifle wide but I've not got my feeler gauges around at the moment. Are coils/parts available for these? Thanks, Sam

I think points, caps, condenser and coils are available for the IH H4 mag. Napa may even have them. Hal

Point that open at all should make spark. Just not at the right time. But, They HAVE TO BE CLEAN. The H4 uses a permanant alnico magnet so unless the coil and or condenser are bad it should spark. Parts are readily available anywhere.

The points are clean (at least by distributor standards) although to be sure I'll pull them right out and get them as perfect as I can. Where is the condensor located, I expected to find one in with the points but there wasn't one there? Is there any way to test the coil with a decent multimeter? Thanks, Sam
