The CowBoard Online Tractor Fellowship Club is planning a restoration project to benefit the WI Archives. We will start on Wednesday July 23 with a non-running tractor, disassemble, overhaul the motor, replace brakes and clutch, overhaul magneto and carburetor, clean, assemble, and paint and will have it ready to auction to 2009 Red Power Roundup Show Attendees at the close of the event. The proceeds of the sale will be donated to the WI Historical Society to help them continue to research & make available online the extensive resources of the McCormick Collection. There will be a knowledgeable tech representative present each day to help guide spectators through the process and to assure a quality and correct restoration. This should be an informative and educational as well as entertaining experience that you will not often see repeated anywhere

I just got off the phone with Phil Reid of HiYield Productions (the firm that produces "This Week in AgriBusiness" for Max Armstrong
We would like to do a DVD video of the project. It will take at least one, probably two camera men for most of the 3 days and then extensive editing to make a 1st class video. So, what do you guys want? Would you pay $30 postage paid for a DVD of the project? How many could we sell 200 - 300? How long of a video would you want? one hour? two hours? or a detailed set that might include 6 hours split up in detailed segments, Engine rebuild, Carb rebuild, Magneto, cluth, Painting, etc? It sounds like it's a go if we can determine what we want and need. I would like to be able to promise Phil sales of at least a couple hundred before we start shooting. That would go a long way to convincing him to take on the job.

I'd be interested. The price seems more than fair. I'd opt for at least a 2 hour video, but the level of detail in a 6 hour would be really helpful.

I think the restoration at RPRU is a great idea and the donation to the archives is a worthy cause. I just wish I could attend this year and watch the restoration in person.

I'd be very interested in it. Aside from getting my "fix" on old tractors, it would be good for references as eventualy i want to fix up a f12-f20 one day. The 2 hour or 6 segments sounds good to me, along with the price.

I'd be in too, and I'd gladly send you the money up front.
BTW, can 'chances' be bought from out of state, or is it an on-site auction?

I read this post a couple times before I decided to answer it. I think you are trying to do something serious here and this "heck, I'll give you anything you want" talk might be a less than reliable indicator of the viability of the project. I have always thought I might one day want to do an "F" series tractor. Do I need a video? That would be a qualified maybe. Definitely need all the help I can get, but there is a lot of that right here on the forums...for free. I might just test the waters here before I bought the video. I also notice a lot of guys who seem reluctant to buy the (I think mandatory) manuals for their tractors. Are they going to buy a video? My opinion? Good idea but you will have to be very careful on pricing it. From my perspective, and given the other resources available, I would look at it as a luxury item that I might take a chance on at $20 but pass over at $30 in favor of manuals and forum advice. I know from experience that video can be time consuming and costly to do well. There will be a price point after which you start to lose sales. The more you have sold, the better the work of mouth advertising. Just some thoughts, for what they are worth.

That's why I'm asking. I have a chance to do a slide-show type presentation and include some other resourses on the CD. It would be a lot cheaper and may be the way to go.

Have you by any chance considered an amateur production company? Some high schools have outstanding facilities and equipment. You would be amazed at what some of these young people are capable of. Might be a cost effective alternative. I would have to think your variable costs (cost per unit) would be relatively low and if you could keep the up front fixed cost to a minimum you could get more units into more hands for less money. Guess you could say you have me interested. Going way out on a limb to mind your business for you! :)

Any chance of getting Max Armstrong to use the video or parts of it on his show or getting RFD to air it as a series on RFD TV? I think that would be a popular program and they could help promote the sale of the video like they do the with their Antique Tractor series.

not a bad idea considering they did a whole schpiel on Orion Samuelsons F-20 and what not

Count me in for a six hour video. I'm buying my grandfather's F-20 back this spring, and will be hopefully my first large scale restoration. So any additional info will help.
Keep us informed, Thanks, Adrian.

That would be sweet.

I would be interested if the wife will give me some money LOL.

She cut me off the funds after buying to much for my H project (which is a long way to being done).

Make it as long as you want, but have a good menu so you can fast forward to particular phases when mid-project.
