I had my M stuck in the snow the other day and as I was rocking it to get it out I noticed a little noise in the rearend or maybe the trans, when I would shift from forward to reverse I noticed a noise almost like a splined shaft slipping,if you know what I mean..any ideas what it might be, I wasnt ramming it from forward to reverse,,just pulling ahead and then back until I made a path I could get the tractor out of,...I know there is something wrong in the trans ever since i got the tractor there has been no 4th gear. Almost like when the 5th gear is locked out, the shifter wont even try to go into 4th,,any ideas on my problems? Thanks,,Jim

Sounds like pinion shaft is sliding foward causing the noise you are talking about, also makes shifting difficult. Better stop using it before pinion shaft bearing drops out.Had same problem on my 49 M,pulled top cover, then split transmission replaced bearings good to go. Scott

Its almost like a slapping kinda noise, so you could be right. My only problem is I need the tractor for a few more weeks until snow is gone, its my only loader tractor that is up and running right now, I use it to move snow banks when i have to and to ove round bales into the pasture, I can make sure not to use it anymore then I have to though, when the snow is gone i have a entire rear half of a M with a rebuilt tranny in it that I can swap onto it,.,,Thanks,,,Jim

Though dammage may have happened already, the issue is really financial. Putting the tractor in suspended animation is going to save you money. If pieces float around and jamb the gears they can break easily. JimN

i should just sell it and let someone else fix it, but its my only loader tractor right now, and i like the wide front end,,,Jim
