Super A Numbers?

I own a '49 Super A chassis serial #278147 but engine serial #126141. Is it possible this engine was replaced? If it was, What engine is this?

Thanks, Roger

Hi Roger,

There should be a sheet metal tag with the serial # 278147. Yes, The book by Guy Fay & Andy Kraushaar "Farmall Letter Series Tractors" says you have a 1949 Super A. I not sure about the serial # you have found on the engine, I can't find it in the book.

Wisconsin Historical Society Louisville Works serial number lists shows first Super A built 12/22/47 Serial Number 250001 Engine Serial Number 250000. Shows your tractor built mid to late August 1949.

Roger: Come back with the engine block part number. That number will be partially hidden by the oil filter. It will be 6 numbers followed by a space, then R1, R2 or R3. There are only a couple of possibilities for engine serial number 126141. Scotty mentioned the Super C and in that case the block part number should be 354898 R1. Another engine to reach 126141 would be Farmall 140 with block part number 367825, probably R2 or R3 by then. The Farmall A would have reached that number with block part 6342 DH, however there would be no provission for a hydraulic pump.

I may have missed something, if it's not a block part number I mentioned, come back with the number and we'll try to sort it out.
