Hi all,
2 questions. 1 - How do you tell the difference between a super a-1 and a super a. I know I can look at the serial plate - but mine is painted over - can't see any numbers. Casting numbers? Engine serial number? I thought I had a regular super A, but when I pulled the carb to rebuild the other day and after cleaning all the gunk, the carb part no. showed it was one used on the super a-1s. It was not in my parts manual. So now I'm trying to figure out if I have a super A that someone at some point put on a different carb, or really have a super a-1. I got the tractor a couple of years ago in Ky and was told it came off a tobacco farm.
Q2 - where can I find an online manual for the super a-1. I see Rudi's site, but his manual is the TC-39B. I think I need TC-39C or better?

thanks for any help!!!!
Kurt

Well, one way to tell is the SA-1 has a taller grill. If you look at a regular A/SA grill you will see that the crank hole is about flush with the bottom slot of the grill opening. An SA-1 grill is much the same as a Super C grill in this regard, i.e., the crank hole opening is a good inch or so lower than the lowest slot in the grill.
I believe an SA-1 has a waterpump.
You will notice there is more of a gap between the gas tank and the hydraulic reservoir under the gas tank - like a 140.

The last Super A manual also covers the Super A-1. Online it is in the parts section of www.caseih.com, or www.external_link. Much better and clearer hard copies are available from Binder Books, www.external_link. The lower quality Jensales manuals can be ordered from this site. In between are copies from your CaseIH dealer. Binder has the clearest diagrams.

I believe the question was about the Super A vs. the Super A1 (digit 1, not the ninth letter of the alphabet). The axle and throttle differences pertain to the Super AI (letter).

Thanks all for the help. I was able to go out today and using por-15 paint striper, take off the layer of paint on the serial tag with out missing up the tag. It turned out to be a later model '53 sn# 349305 J. model FAA. Not sure, but the carb must have been replaced later on. Next I want to find the block sn. My super does have a water pump. Thanks again for the help. you guys are great!

Thanks all. I was able to strip off the layer of paint on the tag without hurting it. sn was 349305 J model FAA. But it does have a water pump. which by that sn, it shouldn't so I'm not sure if I have the front of one, and the back of another. I need to uncover the engine sn and go from there. thanks again - Kurt
