m trans cover

Hi Guys Can anyone tell me for sure if a 560 trans cover will work on a M? Some say it will some say it will not! Thanks in advance Pete

I will take a look at my M and a 560 this afternoon. I think the bolt pattern will fit, however you will definetly have some extra holes near the front for hyd oil return and hyd valve mounting on the 560 and be missing some holes for fuel tank mount and brake covers on m.

On farmall type tractors the 560 cover places the shifter more to rear of tractor like a 400 or 450 cover, compared to a M through SMTA. No shifting forks from a 400, 450, 560 or SMTA is a direct bolt up to a M or SM. M,SM forks will go in a SMTA cover but won't fit any transmission gears except M and SM.
If you want a reverse operation cover, rails and forks your limited to M or SM or special madification. SM may need brake cover holes drilled.

Done a little checking and it looks like reverse operation unlike the regular covers for M through 560 place the shifter in the same place. But you need the shift rails and forks, reverse type for a M or SM to use in a M or SM without modification. As pointed out later covers may have holes or no holes in places compared to SMTA and before.

If you want one bad enough to pay freight from Tennessee there were couple 2 hole M covers on this yard last time I was there 2/3 years ago...Campbell's Used Tractor Parts...Lawrenceburg, TN...961-762-7185.

One was on tractor that had been converted back to forward travel so reverse forks will not be there, but there was one with low drum picker still mounted.

Also forgot to add that a 400,450,560 reverse cover looks just like a regular one of those. So you can see what mounting holes and extra holes is there. All may not be this way, but any 400 through 560 regular cover I removed wasn't drilled for popet balls, springs and shift rail mounting on the right side. Although the casting was made for right hand forks.

'39 M on left. Farmall 560 on right. Last picture shows how the '39 M has a false shelf on the mounting flange. You don't need that extra metal which is not on the 560.

I would rather use a 400-450 lid but the 560 is OK. You will have to modify your M forks as I mentioned several days ago. Get ready to drill a few holes too.

Are three pictures worth 3000 words?
