I have a super W6 TA diesel that does not have power steering. I would like to put it on but only if it was a farctor options my Question is- was it a factory option and/or where can I findout if it was.

If it was offered as a IH option, it should be in the caseih.com web based parts catalog/diagram system. Follow the search for parts icons on the site and then put in the model# (some model effort may be needed, it is not very user friendly at that spot. JimN

I doubt if it was available on 1954 models (W6 TA). My doubt stems from the fact PS was not available on the SMTA.

However, the next model in that line (W-400 and W-450) has it listed in their parts book. There is no starting serial number so I assume it was introduced at the beginning of production on the W-400.

It could be had with and without the Hydra-Touch system. Tractors without the Hydra-Touch used a belt driven steering pump at the front of the engine.

The later system might have been available as a retro-fit dealer available package. The actuator was a single hydraulic cylinder with directional valves built into one end. The ball at the end of the Pitman arm moved the valve. Similar cylinders were used on the 600, 650, and 660. A Behlen or CharLynn torque generator won't work.

I have to agree with Fred. The Super W6 TA Diesel, Gas, or Distillate versions were only made for one year before the W400 and W450 replaced them. When farmers saw the newer version with power steering many scrambled to buy one to install onto there older version tractor. Dealers and McCormick started to realize the tractor was hard to steer and they produced a power steering kit for the tractor. I think there was also a after market company to which produced a power steering unit for the W6.
