International 574 stuck in gear

I managed to get my Int. 574 stuck in forward (high) gear. I cannot get the tractor in any low range, neutral, or reverse. It was working fine, but froze when I was "rocking" the tractor when I had it stuck. Any advice???? Is it in the leakage from the lever, or is internal??? If internal, any idea how to get to it? Thank you.

Hi Sevillian, I have had the Rev/Hi/Lo shift lever stick on a 454 (same as 574) between Hi and Lo. Where it was not in any gear. Just had to wiggle and jiggle shift lever and it went into LO range. DO NOT FORCE THE LEVER. If it is stuck in HI and you can move the shift lever into LO or REV and it stays in HI then maybe you sheared off the range shift lever inside the transmission. Bernard Le Mechano had a procedure to change the range shift lever thru the PTO clutch access hole.

Hope this helps

Jim B -

Thank you for the reply. I can move the lever into Hi and Reverse ranges, but will not go into low or neutral. Can move thru 1-4 gears also. It kinda feels like something is "blocking" the lever from moving into position. Thanks again.

This happens occasionally with a worn transmission. the top of the shifter forks is available behind the range shift lever. Put the shift lever in neutral and move the top of The inner shift fork up. I keep a screw driver in the tool box to do this. I also sprayed the top of the shifter forks (behind the range selector) silver so I remember which one to move.

Hi Sevillian, on 74 series tractors there are two transmissions, speed transmission (1-2-3-4) just behind clutch housing and range transmission(Rev-Hi-Lo) under the seat. There are two range shift levers on the side of the transmission case by the gear shift levers. The Rev-Hi-Lo shift lever mechanism is a bit complex but you can figure out what does the HI-Lo and Rev functions. The speed transmission change levers are on top of transmission under the cover between seat and dash.
BE CAREFULL and BLOCK the REAR WHEELS while working on the gear shift levers.

Good luck

Yep - we used to have a worn out 574 that would jam the shifter linkage, causes the transmission to be in two gears at one time. DO NOT move your tractor in this condition. Unjam by moving the forks as described above. And as also stated, take all needed safety precautions so that it does not roll when the transmission releases.
