I had removed the starting (gas) tank to try to clean it out and there is a substantial leak behind the mounting bracket that is welded to the tank.
Is there any fix for this, or do I need another tank??

I would take it to a place to repair it, a good radiator place should be able to help you. It all depends how bad the tank is in. However they do come up on ebay and such but they go for good money.

If a crack or pinhole it can be brazed. Boil it out to assure it is fume /residue free or it can explode. (Or let others do it as Andrew indicates.)

I can't see where the crack/hole is because it's behind the welded bracket. Gas just drips down between the bracket and tank. Would relining the tank solve the problem?

Get a new one rather than take a chance. Plan B would be to look for a used one, every wrecked IH diesel has one.

You can put the type with strapes that go around tank if you find one with the mounting bracket and clamps. IH stoped selling and installing the welded type for MD tractors. Strap type was sold as replacement for the type you have because of the problem you have.

Not if it is a spot weld that is flexing, or a crack, It needs to be stable. Can you look inside. A good cleaning asround the bracket, then soldering with non lead solder would be fine. It takes 600 watts to solder that thickness successfully. JimN
