M canister o-ring?

was curious how important the depth is when you put the o-ring in, i changed the oil in my M and it didn't have much of a o-ring left, mostly dirt and a little silicone someone put on there to seal it up...so i thought bout bringin my canister into town to get the right size, but does the depth matter a lot as long as it's the right diameter?...i'm sure it doesn't...gosh i love this hobby!

Interesting question. The Oring is a seal, it is square in section, (square "O" ring describes it) the depth of the groove is about 3/16" there is likely a old Seal in the groove unless you can be sure it is as deep as indicated. The old seals get hard as iron and solid. it takes a serious dental pic, and effort to get it out. The dome housing should fit down into the groove with the seal under it. They do not leak if clean, not scratched, and with a new ring. Replace the copper gasket washer on the bolt as well. JimN

Jim is spot on. It sounds like somebody had a leak because a new O-ring wouldn't seal by virtue of it being on top an old embedded one and tried to seal it up with silicone. I'd guess the old ring is still in there.

You can get pretty aggresive trying to get it out. As Jim said, a good hard pick works best, but any sturdy narrow blade will do the trick. The old ring will be hardened and have a sheen like metal when you scrpae it, but it will have a feel that is obviously different from the iron around it. It may be hard to start, and may require some nursing (more picking than pulling on the ring) to keep it coming out once you do get it started, but it will come out. You can usually see some red on the bottom of the channel as reassurance that you've got it out.

Most new filters I've seen for them come with the new gasket.

well my filter didn't come w/a o-ring or anything like some do so i thought i'd take my chances..i took the canister off and cleaned the groove...looks like new, just no o-ring down in there to seal the canister..so before spraying oil everywhere i thought i'd ask...thank you by the way, everyones very helpful, i've got that darn allis in my blood, just trying red on for size ha ha, it's kinda all new to me byt he way...where can i get one for the canister? napa?

I haven't ver seen the flat O-ring as a searate part, so . . .

NAPA would be a good place to start. Their house-brand filters are Wixes and I believe the filter under the Wix number comes part-and-parcel with the ring inside the shrink-wrap covering the filter element itself, just like the FleetGuards from Case IH. What I'm sayin' is that you have a new filter, but no O-ring to go with it. So go buy a new filter and get two changes out of the new O-ring that comes with it (using the filter you have), then stick with the filter/O-ring combination and change both out every time after that.

ah thank you scotty and jim...guess i understand now, i ran outta daylight and coulda swore nothing in the groove...could be in there still?...i picked my filter up at a diffrent place because they had it today and no o ring..., napa takes a day or 2 to get it in..i was in too big of a rush, shoulda waited...oh well...thank you very much fella's, appreciate it

"could be in there still?..."

Oh, yeah. It's pretty impressive the way it will harden up. It will look just like black iron and feel almost as hard. You might not feel the difference with a screwdriver as a scraper, but with something with a sharp awl-like point, you'll feel the difference between it and the real iron. Get hold of it and get it out of there, and a new gasket will take care of your leak.

byt he way...where can i get one for the canister? napa?
You could buy another filter from NAPA and use the O-ring that comes with it. Then, when you change the filter again in a year or two, just leave the O-ring in place and it will be fine for an additional year or two.

Most of the other have told you what you need to know. I went through the same process a couple of weeks ago. For some reason the filters at NAPA didn't all have the gasket. They had to order me one. They stole one out of another filter so I could get by. I bought two filter and gaskets to keep one on hand. The gasket was $.63 if I remember right.

We kept an old ice pick around to chisel them out. I'll bet it is still in the groove.

Get your filters from CAR QUEST they are WIX and come with a gasket. Never have replaced the rubber when changing oil after putting in a new one they will last for a long time. I have some extra if someone need some.

Not too many years ago ALL new filters came with the new O-ring. Sadly, most do not anymore. The Baldwin filters that I sell on-line DO include the new O-ring.

I just installed a new filter from CASE IH and it came with an O ring, but I did also get a new coil from parts store and it didnt come with the new wire nuts on top of it
