1939 Farmall A Electric Start

I have a 1939 Farmall A that has a bell housing with a starter. I have also seen this on a 1940 A. Since the 1939 and 1940 Farmall"s were only available with a hand crank, I can only assume that they were upgraded many years ago. I also thought that it was odd that the engine had the mounting bolts for the generator in 1939 but that the tractor shipped without the generator until 1942. Does anyone know if Farmall sold an electric start upgrade kit? If so, any details?

Whoever told you that 1939 & '40 A's & B's only came as hand start, told you wrong.

Electric start was an option, as was the generator and lights.

IH had an upgrade package that included the bell housing for adding electric starting to an A or B. It could have been done with individual parts too. Electric lights without a starter, which required a generator, was available from the start.

The parts manual shows a bell housing without a starter for serial numbers 501 through 35350. That's where I got the impression that S/Ns prior to 35350 were hand start.

Along with the blank bell housing, the flywheel wasn't cut for a ring gear and the fan assembly didn't have a pulley for the generator belt.

First starter on the A factory was FAA 18322 March 25 1940. Yes there were field kits avail and then they left factory with flywheel ring gears and hole for the starter so all ya had to do was install staerter and wire it. Sure beat changiing bell housing and flywheel in the field.
