Amp Gauge farmall H

Hello i am installing a delco remy alternator(s10, 3 wire) in my tractor.12 volt system.I need to replace the amp gauge. What kind of gauge would i install with this alternator?? How many amp deflection? Is 20 amp ok or should i go larger? thanks john

Get the lowest rated alt you can find. 37 amp is the lowest I know of. Use a 30 amp ammeter and you will be OK. Lower rated gauge is likely to burn out and a higher rated(60 amp) will not wiggle enough to show you anything.

Tractorman's idea is OK. I would find the output of the alt (usually stamped on the housing) and use a AMP gauge just a bit bigger in capacity. Yes it will not wiggle much, but they usually don't wiggle at all, they stay just above center and only when the battery is a bit low from cranking (not common) would it show much charge. But if too small, it can be burnt up if (for instance) you use it to charge/jump another vehicle, or start it with a dead battery. JimN

Any ammeter that fits in the panel will work. If the ammeter scale is less than output of the alternator it'll peg briefly after startup or whenever the battery is down. This however won't harm the ammeter.

FWIW my Super M has the original (20 amp) ammeter and a 55 amp alternator conversion and . It's been pegging every time it's started for 30+ years - the ammeter is still working fine.

Bob M--I feel better--I have a 55amp alt I installed in my 1966 140 with the stock 30-0-30 guage and it's been pegging briefly at startup for 4 1/2 years. I figured I'd change it when/if it blows--so far, so good (like the guy who jumped off the building).
