More questions on a Farmall M

I went today to look at a M that is for sale. The owner was not a home so I did not get to run it, but this is what I found, the sheet metal looks good with paint a few years old, good rubber with 13.6-38 on rear and 6.00-16 on front. It's a 1951 model with a distributor ignition. It appears to have a good bit of slack in the steering and when prying up on front crank pulley the mains have some slack. How can I tell if this is a gas or dist. engine?

Without a head part number you can't be sure. If it has a second starting tank for gasoline, (or a hole in front of the regular tank) it has a probability of distillate. If it has an X1 on the end of the serial # it was originally Gasoline only. JimN

Also on the left hand side coming through the hood there is a small tank that is about a gallon in size. What is that? Is ther any way to tell if this engine has the stock piston kits or the over bore? In a ballpark figure what is this tractor worth? The owner is asking $1200. The slack in the steering and main bearings worry me. I will go back this weekend and run it. Sorry for all the questions but I have not had any dealings with a M before.

I got all the numbers off the block but did not think about the head. The little tank on the side is right by the gauge on the right side of the hood.

With the small tank, it was/is a distillate. No issue they run fine on gsoline. The part number for the head is under the valve cover, Not visible. If you can see in the sparkplug holr with a tiny light you can see if it has dome pistons. It probably has been rebilt at least once, so many opyions are available. If it runs and carries good oil pressure, it is worth 1000 to 1500 depending on tires, and how much you want it. JimN

I guess the how bad you want it part is the kicker. I don't need it but its just one of those things that a person wants. Looking for something to go with my other farmalls.
