My excitement was short lived

What do I do about this, I bet these are not cheap to buy. Both sides are chewed up but the right side is the worst. The bull gears look fine, found a large washer behind the right bull gear, wonder why that was there.

Looks like someone tried unsuccessfully to temove the pinion carrier W/O removing the bull gear. Broke it and just bolted it back up. The pieces fell in the gears and broke the teeth. Some new used pinions and a carrier, and maybe the bearing if it is toast, and all is good again. At least the case bottom is intact. usually the pieces jamb into the space under the bull gear and smash out a hole. JimN

Maybe go to ebay, send a email to the sellers who have H parts on there. The ones that look like they are parting an H out. They can then list these parts for you.
I know the salvage yards 25 miles away has this stuff. You want both pinion gears and do you want a cage for that cracked one? Is that cracked cage the right or left? I'll get a price. Fortunately you are after parts that are rarely bought or sold. Private email is open

Other than what Jim said the washer looks like the one used with the later update inside axle roller bearing. It or any washer doesn't belong with the ball bearing you have. Only other reason I can think of for a spacer, is if the bearing locked up sometime and inside race spun on axle and caused wear on sholder of axle and flange of bull gear. If to much wear the bull gear and axle wouldn't tighten agian inner bearing race when bolt with big washer was tightened. Without seeing this is all a best guess.

I called the salvage yard . They have those pinion shafts (48497D) for 50 bucks, gulp!
The cage (8518DX) is 35 dollars.
I'm sure someone on here can beat those prices.
Actually I know where there is a fencerow H near here, I could get them free, but removing them, out in the 10 degree weather on ice and snow would cost you more than the yard price!

I may have a good gear in the garage, will look tonight. I had to grind down the bull gear to get it flat again because it was run loose. Then had to add shim washers between the bull gear and bearing so the thick washer would tighten against the bull gear and not the axle. Otherwise the bull gear would be loose and allow the axle to float in and out. I have used it for 2 1/2 years plowing, mowing, raking and bailing hay with no problems.

E-mail me and I will let you know if I find a good gear.

I had the same problem last spring. I got the new used pinion gear from Mike at steel wheel ranch. If you think the gear is expensive try pricing new o rings for the pinion shaft cage. Good luck. Matt

Couple of pinion shafts on ebay right now for 25 dollars. Cage also. Search farmall pinion and farmall cage.
