Farmall Cub Brake Upgrade Question

I have a Cub that has no brake stopping power in reverse. I remember my dad modified the brakes on his 1949 model, but I can't remember what it involved? I'm thinking he changed out the brake rods and bands to a newer type?

The early ones had a rod made onto the band, later ones had the rod seperate. I guess he could have changed the bands and linkages to later model.

The linning may be shot or covered with oil from a leaky seal. Good linning and no oil they have great brakes.

Gene has it right, time for a good cleaning or brake change.
The older style brake bands cannot be "updated" with the newer bands, unless you change the whole final drive with it.

I believe youre right. Got to thinking about it, and seems like when I did the brakes on my Cub, the guy asked me the serial number. I wonder if C.Amick is thinking about the throwout bearing, which I know can be changed to the later LoBoy bearing. Ive done that.

I put new lining on one side and can't tell a difference in the braking when going backwards down a hill. I think there is an old set of brake bands dad took off the tractor in his garage. I don't think he changed out the housing. Perhaps IH made a conversion kit or he modified the housing to make the new style brake bands work?
