my generator has been erratic it seems and now it doesn"t start to charge until the tractor is well warmed up and running for about 30 min.-then if i stop the engine i have a hard time getting started again as though the battery is really run down-probably has run on just the battery for a while for sure-the battery takes a charge well-it"s only a year old-am i looking at a new generator or is the regulator causing the problem?-thanks

Hank, The first thing I would do is disconnect both cables from battery and charge it up completely. While the battery it charging clean ALL connections on battery, generator, coil, regulator, etc. making sure that all wires and connections are clean and secure. Then see what happens and use BobM or JohnT charging troulbleshooter that you can easily find in archives.

And next if Bob M's good procedure dont answer your question, try this for a longggggggggg winded test lol

If you can get the cover off the regulator, try burnishing the field contact on both sides with some fine emery cloth. Blow out any grit/ residue, & run a corner of a handkerchief [bandana] through the contacts to polish them. This may get the generator going again. The field contact is the one that is normally closed with the engine not running.

i did pench that and can't print it-i joined the photobucket sie but still can't get that to print-i'm no computer geek but this is a bit much-thanks anyway
