cub final drive threads

Hello folks, the lawnmower wore out. Ran across a little '66 cub with a wodds 42c mower deck. Tractor runs good, no smoke, and every thing works good.

The final bolts that hold up the mower deck are shot and so are the threads in the final drive housing. I ran a tap into the housing but the threads a too worn.

My question is how bad a job is it to remove the right final drive housing? Would like to get it to my local machine shop.

I looked in that farmall cub site and to be honest I found no useful info.

put thread inserts in it.
go to napa or car quest. Tell them yougot some bad threads. they should have a kit. that has a tap and insert and maybe a drill.

The bolt threads are 5/8" - 11. You can drill and insert helicoils without removing the final drive but if you opt to remove it, wedge the front end to keep it from flopping over (believe me - it will) and the removal is not hard at all.

Thanks a lot Bigdog & Bill, this helicol insert is somethig I have never attempted. Just hope i can drill a straight hole with a hand drill. But i;m gonna try..

Nothing useful :?: :?:   :!:

Ok, what did you do :?: Did you by any chance say type into the search box, Helicoil size for Implement Pad threads, or gee... mounting pad helicoils :?: oh maybe helicoil itself :?: .... thread inserts or any of a thousand other permutations  :!:

If you conduct a simple search.. you would have found that there is even a thread in the How To Forums Cub Book of Knowledge that will list a whole bunch of How Do I Fix my Cub type threads. There must be hundreds of threads and posts on Helicoil fixes both on and off of the tractor, removal and remounting of finals and all other types of information. And this is not useful :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

Of course, one would actually have to use the search feature, or I guess one could always post a question and wait for someone to tell them the answer instead of looking for it.

For any site to be useful the searchee must actually look for an answer otherwise no useful information will be found.

Running a tap into the pad holes, without knowing the type of bolt that needs to be there.. in this case a 5/8"-11NC tapered implement bolt would not be the route I would take. I would think most people would actually look up the information in a Owner's Manual, or in a Parts Catalog, and failing that maybe actually look in a Service Manual. And the links to the Manual Server are right there.. in the header  :?

Also, it is rather easy to find information on Helicoils on this site as well. I simply typed into the search box - Helicoil Jig.. and presto.. BusDriver's jig post popped right up.. :!: Re: Drilling for Helicoils.

A little bit of due diligence will provide an abundant fount of information on these Cubs. :D

Make sure you also get a bottoming tap. You surely do not want to drill through the casting, cause then you will really need to get a new one, as they are not easily fixable. Welding cast is not for the faint of heart :!

Mike,
I've done that job myself. You are going to be drilling a big hole and I found it tricky even with the drive off. Trick is getting it level before sinking the bottoming drill in. I used a home style drill press, nothing too fancy. You can buy a kit that comes with the bit, tap, and heli-coil size you wish to insert. Works like a charm. Which side are you doing?

OK,
That means you will have a bit more to take off, plus you will have the long drive shaft to take with you. Will be a good time to check the brake bands, tranny seals etc...

Watch your fingers!

Rudi, perhaps i did not fully explore your site.

To be perfectly honest, it was visually offensive. One post must have a least twenty blinking icons. Also there seems to be a strong emphasis on listing equipment that is owned by the poster, bragging rights i suppose.

A lot of posters on this site possess multiple tractors, myself included, and use them on a daily basis.

My initial impression, is that your site is more aligned to the consumer level hobbist.

I may well be wrong, but those are my impressions.

Also your attack on my posting on this board is totally out of line. For cripes sakes get a life.

First, I did not attack your post, I just simply pointed out the inaccuracy of the contents. Those who know me know that I do not in any way shape or form participate in flames, sniping and other negative diatribes. Second farmallcub.com is not my site, I merely happen to like Cubs a lot, have 3 myself plus a CC and I like the community atmosphere.

I also happen to host the Manual Server which happens to be one of my other hobbies. This was the reason why I posted to your thread, to inform you that  indeedy, yup.. it actually is a very informative site and the answers you sought were conveniently found there. There was no churlishness within my post, just an opinion on the rather churlish remark that was made in regards to the site.

Howver, if one is to be honest, your commentary on the farmallcub site was not only uninformed, it showed clearly that you did not even bother to search. Had you done so you would have discovered the vast abundance of information that is available to Cub owners no matter WHICH forum they choose to visit most often.

As for multiple tractors, well guess what.. that is not the province of the denizens of this forum. And to describe the members of farmallcub.com as consumer hobbyist.. my, isn't that a bit snobbish... :?: :?:

I was just trying to be helpful... oh and the thread on the Helicoil Jig is from THIS site... :!: It just took a 3 second search to find it  :!:

Howdy. Loc-tite makes a product called form-a-thread. I think you can get it from NAPA. Might be worth looking in to. Good luck rw
