switching 450 hyd pumps

I am going to be switching the hyd pumps on my 450 to get the power steering to work, i have done this before, but i am wondering if there is any tricks to getting the pump timed ro the engine, then timeing the disributer to the pump???????

the last time i tried it, it was a pian to get everything timed

Here's how I did my Super M:

Turn the crank to #1 top dead center (align the timing mark on the pulley with the pointer on the cam gear cover). DO NOT turn the crank again once you've set it at TDC!!

Remove the distributor cap and mark the housing where the rotor is pointing. It could be under the #1 or #4 plug tower - it doesn't matter which. You're now OK to pull the hyd pump and distributor assembly.

----

To replace the pump, mount the distributor to the new pump. Then turn the pump drive gear until the rotor points at the mark you made on the housing.

Now temporarily fit the pump onto the engine and seat it fully. Note the rotor has turned a few degrees away from your mark as the helical pump gears meshes with the cam gear. Note which direction and how far the rotor turned.

Now pull the pump back out, turn the drive gear a few degrees as required to compensate for the rotation (ie. to "lead" the rotor) then fit the pump back on.

If you do it right the rotor will be at the mark on the dist housing when the pump seats. Bolt the pump down and you should be good to go!

Bob M. very good explanation of the procedure. I've done the change out - it wasn't completed as logically as your step by step process. thanks for posting. dick
