Lift-all dip stick

I have a 46 M Farmall. Ordered "Gage w/cap" from an outfit. Talked with them on the phone first. I understood I would get the cast screw-on cap with dip stick rod attached. What came is just the rod with washer brazed near the top. The rod appears to be about the right length and about 1/8" diameter and is obviously an old dip stick with a full mark. The rod is used which I understood. I have a cap with no rod (on the tractor which is at another location so I can't look at it now). How did the rod attach? I remember looking inside my cap and saw no obvious way a rod used to attach. Can I make it work or will I have to try and send it back and hunt for another?

The rod doesn't attach to the cap, it hangs from the washer which sits on top of the fill pipe and the cap screws on over it.

Haven't looked at one in a while, but as I recall, the dipstick won't come out of the hole if the cap is attached to it.

It's braised because originaly the rod was pinched at the top to keep it from falling through the small hole in the washer. A lot of dipsticks are lying in the bottom of the sump.
