Setting Valve Lash

Hi all-
I was wondering if someone could give me a rundown on how to set the valve lash on a Farmall M. I see in the manual it calls for .017" hot but I have never done this before and am unsure how to go about it. This sight is full of great info and I was hoping some of you experienced guys could help me out!
Thanks

I do it this way others do a different system. It must be set cold first, so setting it twice (ore once) is normal The cold setting is .020" all valves.
Take out the plugs. (turn it with a wrench, on the front nut)
Set the intake valve on cylinder #1 (Front) when its exhaust valve just starts to open.
Set the intake when the exhaust just closes.
This is the two positions that can be seen on each cylinder to be as far away from a lobe on the cam as possible while still knowing where it is.
The order is (front to back EI-IE-EI-IE)
Look at #1 valves, Turn the engine till the intake just starts to begin opening (moves) then adjust the exhaust valve. Rotate more until the exhaust just closes (just stops moving after having been open) and adjust the intake. Treat every cylinder (pair of valves shown above the same way, remembering they switch places between cylinders) I put a rag over the ones I have dobe to keep track of progress, and avoid mixing what I am looking at. Ah what about 1342 each at TDC??? Set to TDC on one or four and just rotate 180 to the next . . Like doing the 6 cylinders better .As to this HOT set ya never get them hot enough for a real true HOT set . Then there are the TRICK sets but we won't go there.

I use the "9" method as follows. Remove Spark plugs. Turn the engine over until No1 valve is fully open Adjust No 8. Simple 1+8=9

V Open--V adjust

1-----------8
2-----------7
3-----------6
4-----------5
5-----------4
6-----------3
7-----------2
8-----------1
It really is that simple and is doesn't matter which end you call No1 as long as you keep going in the same direction. Set 020 cold and when you check it hot it will probably be near enough 017. that you may not need to readjust. MTF

The only net value of the way I describe it is that it can't fail to work for any conventional four stroke single or multi, even or odd firing (60degree v6 with irregular firing). The only requirement is the identification of which valve is which, on one cylinder. Jim

It is just one of my quarks as to setting each at TDC unless there is a different way like on a hemi or a dohc 427 or 855 cummins . Wish i had a dollar for every valve i have set since back in the sixty's.

With No1 piston at TDC on the compression stroke you adjust valves starting from the radiator.
Adjust valves 1,2,3 &5 then rotate engine until No4 piston is at tdc which should be one full turn. Then adjust 4, 6, 7, & 8. Set them all at .020" cold . Hal

Good call, Hal. Right out of the IH GSS-1356 Tune-up specs manual. It is easy and it sure works well.
