i got a 1456 that the amp light stays on all the time. the charging system charges fine. sometimes the light will flicker but never stays off. my waterpump had recently went bad and leaked a lot of coolant on the alternator and since then the light problem started. could that antifreese have screwed up the alternator? im open for any suggestions. also i have cleaned all the connections. thanks in advance. joe

With the engine running at half-speed or so, check the voltages at the large output stud, the #1 terminal, and the #2 terminal and post back.

Assuming that this system has the original external voltage regulator?

That blue wire on the square plug feeds 12 volts to the light from the alternator end when charging for the purpose of shutting the light off (voltage applied to both ends of the bulb filament = 0 current flow and no light).

If that terminal is grounded inside the alternator (as in a diode blown allowing a back trickle to ground), the light will stay on even tho the alternator chages just fine.

I'd sure check the diodes in the diode trio; betcha one of 'em is leaking.

Allan, IIRC, a 1456 would have an INTERNALLY-regulated alternator. Could very well be WRONG, though.

If it actually IS an EXTERNALLY-regulated alternator, it will NOT have a "diode trio", although it WILL have 6 discrete press-in diodes.

I'm thinking a bad STATOR, followed by a bad diode/rectifier.

Naw,

They didn't start the internally regulated stuff until the 66 series. And they sure as heck do have a diode trio.

Should have added:

What the externally regulatd alternators don't have is the rectifier bridge like the internals do.

The regulator is behind the lower panel in the steering colum right by the park lever on the 06 and 56 series.
