1948 Cub PTO

I need some help on the PTO on my Cub.I have been in there three times in the last year and have replaced the engagement lever twice,I replaced the bushing in the end of the shaft that drives the PTO. It seems to go in gear fine, but as soon as you put a load on it kicks out of gear and you can't even hold it in gear. What else do I need to do? That little clutch is very expensive, but may be the answer.I Need some advice on this! Thank you. Ed

How much engagement of the shift collar and shaft do you have? If the collar is barely engaging the shaft check the pin on the lever that fits into the collar. If it is worn badly it should be replaced. Another thing you can do to increase engagement is to slot the mounting holes on the quadrant so the lever can be moved further.

Has the transmission ever been worked on? Another possibility is that the front bearing retainer on the transmission was installed backwards, allowing the shaft to move forward preventing full engagement of the PTO clutch.
