Gas Tank Liner

Movein' right along....Ran the Super A engine(the one I put the 3 1/4" pistons in)THUR Nite "The Wife" had to hear it run so I busted it off yesterday, let it run less than a minute both times, Haven't put the radiator on Yet....Had to rob a starter off an A, Took the Super A starter to the Starter shop...But SHE runs smooth...Needless to say the gas tank was crudded up on the inside, pulled it off and took it to the radiator shop, will pick it up Monday. Question is what about linein' this tank, I've priced the linein' offered on this site...$40 to $50 bucks....Will these tanks last very long without linein'? New off the flatbed railcar were these tanks lined?

Thanks,
Wild Bill

Galvanized I think, but lining with a chemical film works well. Follow the directions, no shortcuts, and it works well. Modern fuel pulls moisture out of the tank (Assumes ethanol blend)so corrosion is less. But w/o the protection of the original coating, rust can occur. I'm glad it is operating well. I recall trying to inspire you to go for it. Whew! JimN

They werent coated just good clean metal. I have cleaned and used RED COTE it works ok. If the shop gets it clean you wont need any liner. Sometimes the layer on the bottom is too much so the sealer will seal it off.

bill, i have done some tank liners myself, but the last couple i had the radiator shop do them for me. last one cost me 125.00 to boil out the tank and install the liner. i thought it was pretty reasonable. by the time you clean the tank, wash it out with m.e.k. and acetone, and then put the liner in , its a couple days of on and off work.

Wild Bill,
I have been told if your metal is good just boil out the tank. If you have an older tank from tractor you may not be able to replace
than do tank liner kit. I have had some old tanks from the 20's that had pin hole in them.
I bought a tank sealer kit from Eastwoods. If you cover the holes with tape or filler than the sealer makes a new liner in the tank. I have had 2) that were bad, now done no leaks at all.
I think this is least expensive way to repair tanks. oldiron29

If your tank has just "crud" as you say (dried gas, etc.) then just have it cleaned.
If your tank is full of RUST - w/crud or not - then have it cleaned and lined.

Wild Bill:

I much prefer to have my local Radiator/Gas Tank Repair shop do the tank for me with Red Kote. Last tank I had done was over 6 years ago.. and it is still perfect. It is probably cheaper to have them do it, it is definitely safer from a respiratory angle at least (and I spray catalytics.. too boot, but I will not spray these type of tank sealers), and they work.

Thin, smooth regular coat is best.. enough to seal but not cause excessive buildup and plugging or in time failure.

If you go the lining route - use Red Kote. Knock all the junk out and wash it out good with MEK. Then cut your Red Kote 50/50 with MEK so that it gets around the tank's baffle. Pour it in, roll all around, and drain - but save it. Tomorrow give it a second coat and give it a week to dry. If you can force air through it to help dry , better yet. I did my A an it was in tough shape. No issues since! Good luck.
