986 slipping t/a repair cost

Gonna look at a 986 that "slips" in low. Talking to a fellow that borrowed it from the dealer for a couple months. He said it was a very tight tractor. Worked great other than the T/A in low slipping, and the heater fan doesn't work. The tractor is fairly low hours and asking price is $7900 as is. Dealer said they would repair/replace the t/a and as long as it's apart they should replace the clutch. $3500-$5000 more to price. What usually causes these to go out and I also wonder if it is that big of deal. I know tons of '06's running around with the T/A not working as it should.

I have a 4000 hour black stripe 966. TA works flawlessly. I use it rarely, but it's a nice feature when baling and I want to slow down a little without shifting. I rarely do any tillage work, so don't need it there.
I'd be more concerned with the dealers, and your, assesment of the clutch. It's a hydraulic thing and the problem might lie there, if it has a clutch issue.
That is a great price for a 986. I've tried to buy a couple of nice 886, CAH, but they went at auction for right at 14K.

Lets see here 3500-5000 for a clutch and T/A , how times change and people getting more greedy and rip off more people . That job should not cost more 3000 and that is on the high side .

Dave that is not a bad price if the tractor looks in decent shape.

Last clutch and TA I had done was $2600.

I would shop around for another mechanic as TV said.

For a heavy duty ta kit (t/a, mcv pump, quill, and gaskets) $1300. For the clutch kit (pressure plate, disk, release and pilot bearing) $300. Pto and pto bearing cage probably need replace and possibly shift parts and mcv rebuilt. I believe tractor vet pretty much hit the price dead on. I would find a back yard mechanic that deals with this sort of thing and doesn't charge $50 per hour.

My how prices have changed . Looking back over the last one i did before i closed up a H D T/A was 750 list a hd 6 pad and plate was like 250 and bearings were under a 100 bucks even with a new pump and all the trinkets the parts were under 1500 and spliting a 86 was faster then a 66 even with out a cab on the 66. 23-28 hours maybe 30 if things did not go wright . And that included all the people that just happened to stop by .

prices on parts are unreal. When china was buying all the metal from here to ship to there and driving steel prices up it effected all parts to go nuts. We are trying to get camshaft thrust plates from ihc for our rebuilt cams. They went from $9 to $27 per part. That's nuts.

Maybe somebody can correct me if I'm wrong but, The ta shouldnt slip in low, but only in high unless its completly shot. I would tend to think that it is the main clutch slipping.

Most of the time when the TA starts to fail it is on the low side. The low side of all TAs depend on a mechanical clutch. The high side is a dry clutch on the smaller units and a hydraulicly applied clutch pack on units like the 986. If the hydraulics were to fail on a 986 then the high side may not work but the low side would continue to work. Since the TA gets it oil from the same pump as the steering you would usually have more problems than the TA not working.

Are you going to "field work" this tractor. The TAs were primarily designed to shift the tractor down while pulling a mold board plow without stopping when you got into heavy soil. Did this a lot when I was a kid. Of course back then, you wore the engine out a long time before the TA went south. At our farm we have old IH tractors - 656, 886, 1066, 1466. The low side of the TA is out on the 886 and 1066 but since we do no-till farming this function is not missed at all. Why anyone would tear down an otherwise functional transmission to fix the low side of the TA is beyond me - unless you are planning to pull a breaking plow or chisel plow over several hundred acres you really don't need it. You still have 8 forward speeds to select from.
