M long axles?

Was working on the 1940 M that I posted about the other day this evening and got to thinking that the axles are longer than my other M's. The only one here at the house was the SMTA and these axles are 6-8 inches longer. Does anyone know how many were built with the longer axles? Was there a specific use or cropping system that used the longer axles? I was thinking that they would make it pretty easy to put on duals

Long axles were meeded in some types of farming so the rear wheels could run in the low parts of the row when irrigating and also some types of dryland.

Mike: Standard axle for Super M was 84", distance from end of left to end of right. I think M was the same. I know the SH was 84", however H is shorter. I know on 300-400 84" was standard. One option was 100", there may have been others.

The longer axles were optional, I doubt if anyone knows how many of each were sold. No problem putting duals on 84" axles, at least not until you get into 16.9 tires. I've even seen 12.4 duals on an H with shorter than 84" axles. I'm talking use of two Farmall cast hubs, one dished in, the other dished out.

Longer axel were needed for a 1 row sugar beet puller. Those that didn't have the long axels used a axel extension.

I bought an H in Arizona some years back which had a single front tire and the two extra-long axle shafts, I was told this was a specific setup for for cotton farming. One had been flame-cut short by one of the previous owners which was odd-looking butchery at best.

Tread width (center to center of tires) of the M with the standard axles was 52-88", with optional axles 52-100". Longer axles were for crops in wide rows. Likely no record of the number produced, as there was no serial suffix for axles as for most of the other options. It would make it easier for duals, but in 1940, I doubt if IH was considering duals.
