Wagner loader

Bill:

(quoted from post at 19:53:28 02/06/09) Just bought an IH 340 with a Wagner loader. Does anyone have any information on the loader?

Surprisingly one of the best places for information on Wagner Loaders is eBay. I just bought 2 sections of the IH LDR-1 Parts Catalog (wanted the whole thing, but the guy broke it down into 23 sections and sold the individually) for Cubs on two models. Search there. The Wagner Loaders site really is only about 1 page, and does have the history page and one loader manual page but primarily for Fords. There really is not much there as Wagner now deals primarily in Architectural stuff and no longer makes Loaders - hasn't since the early 50's. Interesting site, but not extremely useful.

You might want to just search the net as well, you may be surprised by what you find.

I know it isn't the answer you hoped for, but when dealing with old iron and their accessories, sometimes the hunt is as much fun as the actual gittintoit :)

Bill: I had a Wagner loader on a Cockshutt 540, about same size and configuration as 340U. That was 40 years ago, memory is a bit rusty, but I think model number was 150. Most Wagner loaders, at least in the east were sold on Cockshutts. IH used them only if customer required a heavier loader than the IH line. You may find good Info from the Cockshutt guys.

I have a IWE-1 International Wagner Parts catalog that lists a model 110 loader for use with the International 240 and 340 tractors. It also lists a model 140 loader for International 340 utility tractors.

Model 150 loader was for B-250 or B-275 tractors.

Hugh, I looked at a 560 Cockshutt tractor with a loader this summer that still had the tag attached to the loader. It stated Cockshutt-Wagner. I think Cockshutt may have assigned there own model numbers to the loaders supplied by themselves. The 540 tractor loader model was a "658" Farm Loader for 540, 550 and 411R tractors from Cockshutt, but looks just like a wagner. I know of a few 540's around here and have never saw one with a tag attached to the loader until that 560 tractor. I have also never saw any wagner literature for use on Cockshutt tractors. Not saying that there wasn't any.

Actually they were fairly common on IH tractors. I have a Wagner loader on my 240 utility, and have a buddy with the same combination. I purchased the following booklets on eBay

IH Blue Ribbon Service Manual GSS-1283: International Wagner Backhoes and Loaders, 71 pages.

IH/Wagner Heavy Duty Loaders and Backhoes for International Utility Tractors, 20 pages

The second document lists the following loaders for the 340: 110 and 140. Let me know what spec you need and I'll put them up.

Tim: I didn't buy my 540 new, however I did buy it from the original owner who bought it new with the loader in 1959. The loader did say Wagner, no mention of Cockshutt-Wagner. It was the exact same loader as I've seen on 330, 340, 350 and 460 IH Utilities at the IH dealer.

Two double action lift cylinders, two bucket tilt cylinders, oil reservoir in loader sub frame, Cesna front mount pump with double spool valve with bypass plus an inline filter. The Wagner loader hydraulics were completely separate from tractor hydraulics. There was another model about same size with single bucket cylinder. This was Truro NS, and you could buy parts either at IH or Cockshutt dealer, same parts book. As I recall there were variety of pump options.

There was also another monster Wagner loader installed on 570s, same basic design only larger all around. The dealer at Truro brought in several of those 570s with huge airplane front tires. Cockshutt had a way better clutch and transmission than IH for loader work. There was a Wagner backhoe as well.

I have been searching eBay for a manual such as that. No luck so far. Be interested in seeing it..

Hugh, the couple of 540's I know about only have trip buckets and the one that I have run only has single acting cylinders - no down pressure. It uses the tractor hydraulics to power it. Maybe that is the difference from a "658" loader and a wagner. The 658 parts book doesn't even show any hydraulic options available for the bucket. The 560 tractor I saw this past summer had a way larger loader than what was on the 540's. Probably the same loader was used on the 560/570 as the same loader was used on the 540/550. I saw a cockshutt 35 with a wagner backhoe once at one of the cockhutt shows up your way one summer.

Tim: Bear in mind, I'm not certain of that model number on my loader. It's been 35 years since I sold it.

I've seen that line of lighter loaders Cockshutt installed on 540s and 550s, just figured they were built by Cockshutt. Then the tractor built by Fiat, I believe you called it a 411. I didn't realize there was Wagner involvement in those light duty loaders.

Wagner made a whole line of loaders of various weights for different tractors. If you post a picture of yours I might be able to tell what model it is or at least eliminate some that it isn't.

Here are some specs from my book:

Model 110 140
Bucket Capacity, cu ft 9 11
Lift Capacity, lbs 1600 1600
Operating pressure, psig 1400 1700
Loader weight, lbs 610 673
Reservoir capacity, gals 4.5 4.5
Pulp capacity, gpm 14 20

The model number, when still painted, was on the sides of the movable arms. I'll have to check mine, but I believe there are stamped numbers on the upper arm near the pivot point, on the driver's right side.

Re Cockshutt 540 and Wagner loader, we had a neighbour that had the same Wagner loader as Hugh was describing, front mount pump, dual cylinders on bucket and doubling acting cylinders on the arms. It was almost to much loader for the 35HP 540.

Jim: You got that right on, bucket must have weighed 800 lbs. I had a 3 point hitch barrel of concrete, if you installed the bucket, you installed the barrel. With the concrete on back, not a bad old loader. We took the loader off once per year and used the 540 pulling hay wagons.

We have the very same setup.Apparently that was a popular combination.
If the link does not work you can Google "wagner loader manual" and the link is probably the second hit. The manual is probably not you exact model but still has a lot of good information it. It is a PDF file thats about 7meg or so.

The 340 its on is quite ruff to say the least. The add said loader for sale cheap and when they went to look at it they found the 340 was included. But the 340 runs and the loader is very solid, but much work remains on the 340....

Hope this helps
