Farmall 504 Serial # 7879 and S-X-Y-FF Code

Just picked this tractor up and do not know what the S-X-Y-FF means.
Also never seen the type of pto on a tractor before. It is not a splined shaft, it has a smooth shaft with a threaded end. Any idea what this is?
I have a parts manual and cannot find this type of shaft.

Don't know about the PTO apparantly someone put the shaft in for some sort of pulley, although they could have used a splined one, otherwise I don't know. As for the letters, S is means it has a TA with provision for a 540 rpm independent PTO (your shaft ??); X is a high speed low and reverse attachment; Y means Hydra Touch low and reverse attachment with a 12 gpm pump; FF means hyd power supply with a 4.5 gpm pump. This is from Guy Fay's data book.

A good bookstore, or Amazon.com, barnesandnobel.com, etc. I believe it is still in print. HOWEVER, it only covers thru the hundred series (100-650), not the 404/504, but I believe the codes are still current.

I agree with CNKS, the S is TA w/ IPTO, X is high speed 1st and R, Y is 12 gpm pump, FF is 4.5 gpm hitch pump. I have a F504 diesel, SN 3712 which is a 1962. Your SN 7879 makes it a 1964 model. Is yours a diesel? If the TA is not operational in low, FIX IT... Do not do a delete kit. Do not let anyone talk you into cutting your xmission gear selection in half. I have a loader on mine and use the TA constantly. Read up in the archives on proper use of the TA. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES use the TA as an engine brake or down steep hills, it will trash the sprag.

Post some pics of your new purchase if you can. Here is a pic of mine...

Good luck,

Charles,
My 504 is a gas burner, not sure about the TA as I have just unloaded it and will start sometime today to check it out. I know that the switch needs work, lights, fenders and one front tire. Have a slow leak in the left rear tire and need some o-rings in the hydraulics. Fuel tank needs cleaning, the sediment bowl had about half a bowl of red mud.
In other words, it needs a lot of tlc.
In cranks and runs great, no smoke, or major leaks. the lift works good.
Thanks again for the help. Will post some pictures soon.

From Mississippi? A low drum cotton picker tractor? Or one with an angled round brush for sweeping roadways prior to repaving? I have the rear end of one just like it.

Came from Bradford, TN area. Don't know, but it doesn't have any evidence of having a cotton picker or a brush on it. It's a standard row crop with a 3 point lift and standard hydro outlets.
