Farmall A starting problems

I just purchased a 1946 Farmall A. The engine was completely rebuild with dome pistons wich gave it 24 HP at the PTO on a dino test. The head has new valve guides and the valves ground. Tractor does not smoke at all. My problem is starting this beast. I go to start it and it acts like its flooding. Tractor trys to run like the fuel is burning but not burning fast enough. After going through this a couple of times I finally get the tractor started. Am I starting wrong? Whats is the best way to start this thing? Carb was rebuilt and I always shut the gas off when tractor is not running. Please help.

Sounds as if you have carb adjustments problems or your air filter may be pluged up a little causeing it to flood some what.

It does it even with the air filter disconected and the only adjustment on the whole carb is the idle mixture adjustment and the idle adjustment. The carb is a Zenith,

The float may be set too high and it may have a pin hole in the float causing it to sink. Check the float level and shake that float to see if any gasoline can be felt sloshing. That float needle valve may not be shutting off the fuel. Hal

Check that there is a good flow of fuel to the carb and no in-line fuel filter. Also check the float level in the carb, it may not be adjusted correctly.

In a case like this, I would turn the gas on to fill the bowl in the carburetor, then turn the gas off. Then start the engine. Engine should tun alright till the carb is empty. If this is what it does, something is wrong, as others have mentioned. Too much gas.. Just my thoughts. Bernie Steffen

Is the rotor lined up with the tower when it fires. If you are running a dist mite need a little more advance.

Does it run okay after you get it going?

The others have good ideas. Just for one more, try less choke when starting. When in good order, these little engines won't take much more than a couple of revolutions worth of choke before they start flooding.

Starting from cold, using about 1/3 - 1/2 throttle, close the choke and turn no more than a couple of turns, then open the choke completely. If it hasn't started in a few more turns you could try about 1/3-1/2 choke, but for no more thana couple more turns before opening it back up. If your carb (especially the float and needle) are in good shape and it takes much longer to start up, then Gene's suggestion that you go over your ignition moves to the top of the list.If you get the timing right, it ought to fire in the first few turns.

Sounds like distributor timing---but, if timing is right---I'd pull the valve cover & see what the valve clearance is. You might have to adjust the lash.

Best way to start a 113 Zenith equipped engine is by not using the choke at all, if possible, under your local weather conditions.
Your float level may be off a little as others have mentioned. If it puts out black smoke when you get it running, that is a sure sign. In that case, readjust your float level initial setting to where is is just a little more than spec calls for - a "skinny" 1/8" more. That will cut the gas off in the bowl at a little lower level.

Thanks everyone, I fixed the problem. The problem was somone had the valves adjusted to tight. I adjusted them the righ way and now it runs and starts great. I also had to advance the timeing.
