The steering in my Super A has excessive play; you can turn the steering wheel from about 10:30 to 2:00 without any movement of the front wheels. All of the play seems to be coming from the gear box. There doesn't seem to be any play in the tie rods at the tire end or at the other end of the tie rod where it fastens to the rod coming straight forward out of the steering box. When you turn the steering wheel the steering shaft has some fore and aft play. With the same movement from the steering wheel the arm coming straight forward out of the bottom of the gear box has some up and down play. I removed the steering shaft out the front of the gear box and everything looks good and feels tight. There is no play or slop in the bottom bearing.
Any ideas where to look and what to do? Can one block up the front end and remove the gear box easily? Are there any adjustments that can be made inside of the gear box? Or shims to add or take out to take out the play?
While I am asking, I am looking for a distillate manifold, heat shield, linkage or controls for the shutters, and the fuel switching valve. Any help on any of these problems will be greatly appreciated.

Tree Farmer: The vertical shaft in that gear box has two woodruff keys. First keys the half gear to shaft and second keys steering control arm to shaft. If bad enough those two keys alone can give 1.25 turns of free travel on steering wheel.

You mention end movement of steering shaft, that indicates the bearings on that shaft are worn.

If the steering wheel shaft has fore and aft play it it, it indicates the bearing at the end of the shaft is bad or not properly clamped in place. You say you removed the steering shaft out the front of the box. If you did that, you should have been able to check the bearing for play. That bearing is cheap and easy to replace. If any play at all it it, get a new one. When the shaft is put back in, the bearing must be clamped tight against the shoulder on the shaft by the castle nut and washer on the shaft. If not tight, you will have steering play. When you put the shaft and bearing back in the box, the outer race of the bearing must be clamped tightly in the box with the big hex plug. If the hex plug does not clamp the bearing race in tight, you will have steering play. I've found it necessary on occasion to use a machine washer to get the bearing clamped in. If you use a washer, take care that it only contacts the outer race and does not interfer with the other parts of the bearing.

You said there is end play in the steering shaft that means the bearing is bad. I would tear the whold sector down and rebuild with new bushings, bearings and seals and gaskets refil with 90wt and you have new ssteering. I have rebuilt several the last few yrs with great results. I also use a calipers to check the rod ends to see how much egg-shaped they mite be and use a disc grinder to get them round again. You will like the end results.
