Hi yall working on an old H. Have converted to 12 volts, switched to point less ignition. Jad to remove the dist. I folowled the prcedure to time the H. Plugs are good and have 12 volts at the coil. It has a 3 ohm rest built in.I might have messed up the timing cause now i just keep cranking then all of sudden a loud bang. I know i compsenated for the for the meshing of the gear. Any body able to help?

The way I do it. Take out the number one spark plug. Hold your finger over the hole. Turn the enigine over slowly, when you feel air pushing out keep turning till the mark on the crankshaft pulley lines up with the pointer. Then take off the dist cap and check where the rotor is pointed This is where the number one sparkplug wire goes. The rest in firing order. At least thats the way I do it. luck Bernie Steffen

Set TDC on # 1 as Bernie says. If the rotor does not point to #1, remove the distributer, rotate until the rotor points to #1 and install in that position. Do not try to "compensate for the meshing of the gear", (whatever that means). The distributer will mesh properly without moving the rotor from #1. After the gears mesh and distributer is inserted all the way, rotate it conterclockwise. Remove the coil wire from the distributer cap (switch on), hold end of wire 1/8 inch from the screw/nut on the dist that the small wire from the coil attaches to, rotate dist clockwise, viewed from the rear, until you get a spark. Tighten the distributer. It is timed. As a final check rotate engine one full turn, and check for spark again with the coil wire. If it does not start after that, it is not timing.

Good way to go doing it that way as how can ya get it wrong following that procedure. I like to have #1 wire going to the plug and i can watch it fire and with finger in the hole ya know pretty quick if you are in time.
