Which Tires to Buy?

1941 Farmall A.
Has 4.00 x 15 front tires, in poor shape.
What are recommendations for:
1. where to buy new tubes and tires.
2. which ones (and sizes) to buy.
3. what price to expect.
I have seen things on E-bay, offerings of the Miller Company, etc. I would like to keep the tractor original, but would make a minor deviation in tires, possibly.
Thanks,
Tom in Iowa City

My local Firesone dealer gets just over 40 dollars ea for new 5-15 4 ply tri rib firestone tires. I put two on last spring. The tubes will probably be 15.00 ea. I put the Firestone tri rib on my tractors, they steer better than the four or five rib, look good, and hold up really well.

You might check Harry's farm tires over in Wheatland [30-40 miles East of you. Town & Country tires in Durant 563-785-6699 can probably order what you need. Don't have Harry's number. Personally, I'd stay away from Titan tires. The oldest boy had Titans on the rear & they cracked beyond repair in only 3 years. I don't think good tubes can be bought any more. They are all junk. Just my $.02 worth.

I've heard of the issues with Titan tires, but I've never seen them. I have a pair of Titans on the front of my 1940 H. Put them on probably 10 years ago and never a problem. The H IS a working tractor.

I got Goodyears from a rural Goodyear dealer and were not much more than cheap tires and these were 6 ply! Been on for a year and still look new.

I have no experience with Titan rears but I we have several tractors with Titan front tri-ribs. They will go neck and neck with ANY tri-rib and made in the USA. I have personally seen the Natchez, MS plant (drove by!)... If nothing else they are USA built.

I agree on the tube issue. Most are pretty thin and seem to chafe easily. Not to mention the crummy valve stems. Good luck my friend.

I better add this, Be sure to use tire talc on the tubes! I have seen some people not use it and not using it will cause tubes to chaffe and fail. Watch the guy putting them on to be sure he does it if you are not doing them yourself.

I ended up with the Miller Goodyear tri-ribs (5.00 x 15). This was best for me as tires and tubes arrived on my front porch with little additional effort and my tire dealers were a good drive away and we were working extended hours at the time making it difficult to get there in time. Tubes were included...I just had to supply the "spoon" which I already had.

TSC was almost immediately ruled out after I looked at them...then came here to learn I think I made the right choice.
