240 hydraulic problems

I have a 240U that I recently repalced the hydraulic pump on. all is well right???? Well not really. the pump workes fine (better than ever) it picks up a load all the way and despite some adjustments and small parts missing that I repaced I got the unloading problems sorted out. Now I have a horrible problem with Foaming. It looks like air (no slimy water in oil look) I checked the screen, changed the oil and beceause Hy-Tran is not so easily found here I put in ISO 46 hydraulic and transmission oil to 1/2 inch below the filler. Foam and more foam. Comming out of the breather and every joint in the system until the level is 3/4 inch below the filler plug threads. Now the hitch wourks fine but still with the foam. Is it the oil or is something more happening? Any Help would be Great!!
Thank You
Jim

Any chance you're sucking air into the system through a connection? It may not necessarily leak fluid to the outside when it's just sitting there.

A pretty simple method of assessing an air leak.
(which causes foaming)
Using a rubber stopper with a tire inflation (schrader) valve inserted, replace the filler plug in the resrevoir.
Use a hand tire pump, or very careful use of a compressor, to put 15 to 20 psi in the reservoir.
with this pressure, an air leak on the suction side will clearly be shown. Seals in the pump itself can leak, so if no leak in the piping or external Orings is discovered, pull the pump out of the front cover a small amount to check if it is leaking into the front cover. The pressure should be stable in the system for 15 minutes. If it bleeds down almost immediatly use a spray bottle of dilute dish soap to spray down the exterior searching for bubbling leaks. Good luck, JimN

Wow, that's exactly the same problem I'm experiencing with my 240U! I cleaned the screen, replaced the filter, rebuilt the hydraulic control valves, and replaced all of the O-rings between the pump and the control valve, replaced the pump's gasket, and it still foams out the breather until the level of fluid drops. I noticed the section of rubber hose in the suction line is kind of ratty looking, and wondered if air could leak in, while fluid wouldn't leak out, but didn't know if that was possible. I'll try the pressure test Jim suggested as well. Please report back what you find out, as the problem has been driving me crazy.

Some times rubber hoses will not allow the pressure test to be successful. A flap of internal lining can open on suction, and close on pressure. To really test the ratty hose would require plugging the ends and putting a partial vacuum on it to see if it leaks in, not out. Might be as easy to use new hose. JimN

I have already replaced my rubber sucktion line and I still had the problem. I am planning on trying the air pressure test. This is just one of thouse things that will make you lay awake at night. I am still kind of wondering about the oil what kind are your running since you have the same problem? I was also told that I may be have too much hydraulic pressure and the oil is recerculating in the system too fast? I am not totaly convinced but I am about ready to believe anything at this point!

Is the oil liquid and slippery? Yes? Then it's good enough for testing.

Really, oil is oil. If you're somewhere near right on the viscosity, the hydraulic pump can't tell whether it's SAE10, HyTran, or extra virgin olive. Neither can the hoses, valves, or cylinders.

The major differences between the oils are the additive packages which do things like keep the moisture in suspension, or keep the sludge from building up.

Can't find hytran? Walmart carries it in 5 gal buckets over in automotive, bottom shelf. Also has 2 gal jugs but pricier. Super tech has the same api ratings as other hytran. I use the 303 oil in the yellow bucket from Orscheln cause they run it on sale every so often for about $23 a bucket or so.

Jim

I don"t know what ISO 46 is. I don"t use Hytran, but rather NAPA"s Universal Tractor Hydraulic Fluid. It is labelled to have equivalent specs as Hytran, and that"s all I"ve ever used in any of my tractors. I"ll check what the ISO number is for it, but if what you are using is a "hydraulic oil", I don"t think it could cause foaming. My understanding is that hydraulic fluids are all a 10 weight oil with different additivies to capture water, prevent corrosion, etc.

Also some seals are not compatable with some fluids... you need to be sure it's the right stuff or a compatable replacement.
