Farmall H Distributor & Governor questions

I posted about the greasing of the distributor last week. I put in a grease zerk, pumped it til grease came out the small hole, but no grease went inside the shaft. Took it apart and see no way for the grease to do anything? The sleeve I pressed out has no holes in it for the grease to lubricate the shaft. Is this an "upgrade"?

Is oil supposed to flow through the distributor drive housing and up to the distributor shaft?

On the governor there is an adjustment that I have not seen on any other of my H's. Is this something added later? What is it for?

Randy - Someone else will have to advise you on your distributor lube question. (I put in a zerk in mine and give a couple pumps from the gun annually. Where the grease goes I have no idea...)

I've never seen an adjustment like that on an H or M governor either. However it looks like the "buffer screw" on my gas Olivers' governors. It's there to eliminate surging at full RPM and no/light load.

As I recall here's how to set it: If the engine surges or "romps" under full governor and no load, slowly turn the buffer screw in until the surging just stops. Then tighten the locknut.

Original type bushing is porous and the lube soaks through. Thats a bumper spring on the governor, helps with surging. Mostly used on some power units.

In my opinion the grease zerk is kind of a weird joke. It is explained, but really does not work.
The bushing it is "servicing" is, as you point out, not connected. If I were inventing it I would have made provisions for engine oil to be used to lubricate it, with a seal on the distributor end to keep it in. Or a oil hole and flip cap to lube it with real oil annually.
Well that is an interesting issue, I think I will drill a hole in my housings like it (when I get into one for other reasons) and make it a lube point with a cap or plug to keep out dirt.
The adjuster is probably an attempt to modify by a prior owner. JimN

My 1940 H has that same adjustment on the governor. May not be original, but I have no reason to think that it is not. I have another H with the C-164 power plant engine, and that governor does NOT have that adjustment. Again, it may or may not be original.

Thanks everyone for the info, I guess I will lube the shaft up good before I put it back in. Still don't see how grease can migrate through that bushing, oil maybe, but not grease.

Got about $70 just in bearings for the governor, and still have to fix the throttle shaft, might have been cheaper to find a used one
Oh well, it's good experience.

Randy -

Were you able to find the gaskets for between dist/drive assy and drive assy/governor, or did you have to make them? Looked like maybe you were making one in one of the pics on your farmallh site. They are very thin/rubbery - if you made them, what material did you use?

Have been enjoying your farmallh site - it looks great.

I made the one between the cast housings using this gasket material from NAPA. I have a pattern for the rubbery gasket but have not found anything yet on that one. May just order it.
