Live pump return line

The return line from my reservoir to my live pump is approx 1 1/4" id, and leaking badly at one of the fittings, and I think needs to be replaced. Can I use a smaller line (3/4") to replace it with no ill effects, or should I just have another big one made?
Thanks,
Ben

I wouldn't recommend it! There's no gravity head help flow oil to the live pump. Installing a smaller line will restrict the return flow and could starve the pump - especially in cold weather. (You don't mention what tractor this is. But if it's a Super M the pump flows 12 gallons/minute at governed speed. That's a LOT of oil for a 3/4" return line!)

The good news is the return line operates under no pressure whatsoever. So pretty much any oil-resistant hose can be safely used - ie. pressure-rated hose is NOT required.

Thanks Bob. I forgot to mention this is an MTA. I remember the last time I had a 1/2" hose made up I nearly choked at the price. I'm sure they are better quality than the ones I buy at the farm store, but about 3X the price. I'll see about putting something together.
Thanks,

Ben

Ben - I've seen a couple different Super M's/400's work for years with suction lines cobbed from clear, soft vinyl hose and a pair of hose barbs. Not pretty, but it works.

The key is to make sure the hose is oil-resistant!

Thanks again Bob. With the price of even generic hyd fluid, I hate to watch it drip in a bucket in my shop. I'll track something down and put it together.

I prefer using pressure hose for return lines. You can get pressure surges when a loaded implement is allowed to drop by gravity with a single acting cylinder. They look better too.

Surplus Center in NE sells ready made hydraulic hose assemblies for cheap prices. You might find one that is the right length. If not, buy one longer than you need and have a local shop shorten it. You should save some money.

In years past, I always bought the big box of hoses you see at every auction. I have saved tons of money by having these hoses shortened to fit.
