External Regulator... or not

Hi,
My External voltage regulator on my IH2444 is shot. It puts out about 19volts! I have been debating replacing it with a new on or replacing the alternator with and internally regulated one instead. I have a good alternator that came off a 91 ford Ranger so replacing the alternator would be the lower cost option but I am wondering if there is a downside to going internally regulated that I am not considering? Thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Ian

If the electrical system is pretty much in good condition, i would leave it as is and repair or replace the regulator--especially if it is delco. A starter and alternator repair shop should be able to help you out. if you are in an area more urban or the stores are all retail oriented, a delco regulator from a 1969 chevy pickup with a 292 would likely be the same as the IH. If it is not delco, let us know and we'll see what other ways we can help you.

Presuming your 2444 has a Delco alternator your quickest fix will be to replace the external regulator.

However if you are bent on swapping the OEM alternator for an internally-regulated unit you must make some minor wiring changes – whether you use the one salvaged off your Ford Ranger or obtain a Delco unit.

Personally I’d recommend the Delco. It will be a direct swap into the existing the mounting brackets. And you can swap the pulley from the original alternator.

A working Delco can be had for $15 - $20 at a junkyard. Or you can buy a reman at any auto parts store for under $40.

Thanks guys,
You are probably right I should just stick with the external regulator. It is a delco Alt and regulator so I guess I will try and locate a suitable regulator. The truck information will help allot as most of our parts stores need to know exactly what vehicle you are refereeing to or they have no hope of finding what you need... it drives me nuts but that is the way it is.
