Hi to all,
Are the gears in the transmissions, rears and final drives the same ratios, or are they different between a 40 A, 46 A and 53 Super A.
Thinking about the 46 A on parts photos for spare parts for my A and Super A. If not, are the gears comercially available, or only from scrap/recycler. Also have a fairly loud noise from the trans. while driving on the Super A, hoping it's a bearing.
Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Adrian

I have replaced the bearing on several of the A and B where the u=joint is along with the seal and then find out how much it has quieted the tranny. I have gears if ya need some. You need to split at the front of the tranny.

Adrain: All gears are the same in size, number of teeth, etc. There is one other concern, and I don't have exact serial number, however mid way through SA production the case hardening of gears changed. From mid SA on those gears are harder, and I'm not sure it would be wise to mix harder gears with older ones.

My experience also tells me never change gears to run on other gears having a different degree of wear. For example if you change 2-3 slider, install the matching gears they've run on for years.

I don't know if new gears are available, might be worth checking out. I know I was surprised I was able to buy a new crank pulley.

Part way through A production the oiling system was changed. This is when the oil slinger gear was added. I don't remember the serial number break. Quite a few parts will still interchange. The part number of the housing changed so you can tell them apart without disassembly. Check the parts catalog for details. The input shaft changed brtween A and Super A.

Hugh gives good advice on matching used gears. A lot of people will tell you you can swap in individual gears and they work fine. Usually true, but not a way to eliminate noise!

Thanks for the replies, probably won't be until this fall at the earliest that I'll be able to properly investigate the Super A.

Thanks again, Adrian
