674 loose mains

split dads 674 yesterday to put in new clutch. found some oil in the bell housing indicating a rear seal problem. problem is the flywheel will move up and down about a 16th of an inch. the tractor starts and runs fine, has plenty of power and no smoke. dad bought it new and it has a zillion hours on it and two overhauls so far. is it reasonable/advisable to spin in a set of mains and not do a full rebuild? thanks for your input.

I asked a simulair question at a IH dealership and the shop foreman nodded his head and said "Yeah, you could do that."

Hi, re rear seal, my brother's 684 would always leak a little crankcase oil from the inspection plate at bottom of bell housing. A few years ago when we did a clutch replacement & flywheel grind, we found the cap screws on the rear seal were all loose, tightend to spec, no more oil leak.
Re main bearings, several years ago we had B414 with BD154 and oil pressure would drop when it was hot. Discussed with IH mechanic and he suggested replacing rod & main bearings as early BD154 had a "soft" bearing problem. It fixed the problem and engine ran great until Dad traded many years later.
