Will a distributor off a C work on a M?

A friend has a IH distributor off of a Farmall C. Will it work on my M? I heard one time that the weights may be different, but others have said it makes no difference.

It will work advance curve may be a little diiferent, doubt you will notice any difference in way tractor runs.

The mounting flange (where you loosen the clamps to set timing) has a code letter stamped into the outer edge. The unit from the C may have originally been on something else. The C distributor is code J, the M distributor is code A.

Code A maximum advance is 40 degrees at 1400 rpm.
Code J maximum advance is 30 degrees at 1400 rpm.

By the way, the Super M used distributor J, so I'm guessing it doesn't matter much which one you use.

By the way, the springs determine how quckly the spark advances but the maximum is determined by the shaft. Both the springs and shaft are different between the A and J distributors.

It won't run quite right if the advance isn't right, at least in my experience. Dad fiddled with the timing about a hundred times and just couldn't get the M to run smooth all the way from idle to full with the wrong IH distributor. We think it came off a C or a C113 power unit.

Eventually he had to give up, put the old Prestolite distributor back on and fiddle with that one until the tractor was running right again. He couldn't figure out what kind of distributor it was to get ignition parts, which is why he got the IH distributor from my uncle. It came from Central Tractor back in the early 80's when the OEM distributor wore out and tore its own guts out. Billet.

Ms did a lot of work with magnetos and they did not even have advance, when it started it went to whatever time was set on and stayed there.
