Bought a 1466 a couple years back and the low side of the TA is out. Going to have her replaced, pump rebuilt/replaced, etc. But have a question in regards to using the TA.

In reading the countless posts, it is clear that the TAs should be swiftly moved between direct and low. But I'm a tad confused on the free wheeling part. I've read on this forum to prevent tractors with TAs from free wheeling when in low. Some have stated that some of the smaller TAs allow for free wheeling while TAs on larger units do not.

So back to this 1466....is free wheeling something to be concerned about on this model assuming it is adjusted correctly? If the TA on this model locks and doesn't cause the machine to literally free wheel, then all is good. But if it doesn't, I'm just wondering how you prevent free wheeling cause it is going to happen potentially when pulling, let's say, a silage wagon thru a hilly field. And to be frank, the cost of the TA itself, my labor/time, etc is going to be high and I don't want to be kicking myself down the road.

Thanks!

A good TA on a 1466 should never free wheel in high or low. T A's used on MTA thru 656 would free wheel on low side when going downhill.

Thank you Bill. That is great to know/learn. Take care.

No this t.a. will not free wheel, however we were always told that say coming up to a stop with aloaded wagon and pulling the ta allowing the load to push as the ta was shifting to low would knock the low side. My 2 cents

I've heard the same thing...that you should never use the TA to slow down a load. Only shift from high to low when there is a pull not a push.

Glad to know what I heard is now confirmed. Thank you!

Not that any of this will affect me, but is it the actual shifting that might cause a problem? In other words, if it's "already on the low side" and you start down a hill or throttle down for a stop, will it hurt? I am only familiar with the older models that free-wheeled... 350,450, 460, 460U and 560 I believe are all I have had the pleasure of running in the field.

The TA in the 1466 uses one less lock up discs on the TA side than the direct drive side so the potential for clutch slipage is greater while in TA than in direct drive. The only time it becomes an issue is when you are pulling a heavy load going down a steep hill while in TA low side. If you are replacing the TA have one installed that has an extra low side clutch disc in it and you won't have any problems.

when you get ready to replace your t/a make sure you buy the heavy duty version. It has a single metallic disc and 3 paper discs on the direct drive side for more abuse. I have been building t/a's for almost 17 years now. If ya still need the parts feel free to send me an email.
