Char-Lynn Power Steering Help

Lately I have been having some problems with the Power Steering on my Super M. The first and major issue is that it seems to leak out of the resovior. I noticed that fluid will seep out of the hole on the top of the resovior that holds the top of the reservoir. It seems every week I have to fill the fluid back up again. I tried putting new washers and O-rings on the wing nut but nothing seems to work. Then when doing chores today it became impossible to turn the wheels to the right. The fluid level was were it is at correct level and the only explanation would be if there is air in the line or something froze in the line. Temps here in Eastern Iowa have been close to 0 for several days. Another issue is I can't seem to shift the tractor into 3rd gear. What could be the possible culprit? How serious is my power steering problem? I rebuilt the power steering pump this past summer, in an attempt to fix this same leak, but obviously that didn't work. What do I need to do in order to fix this issues????

dave, kinda almost sounds like there is a problem in one of the hydraulic lines, maybe the inside seperated. it seems to be building too much pressure in the resevoir and blowing fluid out the cap. and, now that the steering is not working even tho the res is full sure sounds like a restriction. if you have a hydraulic pressure gauge, get a pipe tee and some nipples, i think its 3/8 pipe and tee in at the high pressure feed at the torque generator. see what your pressure is. the pump should generate somewhere between 800-1000 psi when turning the wheel. at center steer position, the pressure reading should be around 200 psi.i have some char-lynn steering manuals scanned on my computer at the shop, if you want, shoot me an email and i can send them to you. glenn

You actully sent me your manuals all ready, They ahve been a BIG help, thanks. I'll look into finding the proper operating pressure, Thanks for that idea.

i wasnt sure if i had sent you copies, i had quite a few guys request em that i sent them out to. i had one of my m's spitting fluid out, wound up cutting a new gasket for the ps pump lid out of an old innertube, still seems to be holding. it was a temproary repair about 4 years ago or so.. i'd like to get a copy of the manual to do the m+w live pump coversions on the early m and h, i had the manual but it got lost somewhere.

well there a great tool and have been a big help. I made a new gasket out of cork, but I'm not sure it is holding, need to look at that too.
