6.0 powerstroke

I have a line on a 2003 f-250 with a 6.0, have any of you guys had any bad, or good luck with these engines. thanks

I've got a friend who has one, 03 and a 6 speed, uses it as a farm truck and for hauling equipment, and other than expected maintenance items he's had no trouble. If you put a major power increase to them they have a tendancy to blow head gaskets. You can replace the powerstroke-specific parts with the corresponding Navistar parts for a little more power and fuel efficiency.

BEWARE! 03&04 had programming issues. In August 04 they started generation 2 6.0L. I have 250 with that engine. 1 turbo replaced, 2 injectors, 1 camshaft sensor, all under warranty. Go to www.powerstroke.org. Read the reviews. Make sure you get the Oasis report on the vehicle to see what been done to it. Most of the 03s are coming out of warranty (5yr 100k), so there are a lot of "deals" right now. See me in September for a deal on mine! Good news is that it has the power to do what you want. I've pulled up yo 18k on a gooseneck with no motor power issues. If you program it, Edge Juice is the best, but use it with common sense. Ford now owns cummings, so when those mopars finally loose there contract with cummings we might see a super duty with a cummings. Now if we can just get a Allison tranny behind it. As with any engine there are good and bad and this is just my experience with it. Take it for what its worth.

Ford may own a company called "Cummings" but they don't own CUMMINS.

I have a little different take on the 6.0 problem. That truck is now 6 years old. If the truck has made it this far, odds are that either it's one of the good ones (8 out of 10 had ZERO problems, not good odds on a new vehicle but still heavily in your favor) or it has already had the problems fixed. You can get a CARFAX report to see what work has been done to the truck.

I still Love that old Ford owns cummins thing. makes me laugh every time. If I had a dollar for every time a ford guy has told me that I could buy cummins myself

Ford may own cummings. but they surley dont own cummins.

You CAN get a Cummins in a Ford, just not out of the factory. And run an Allison with it too.

I replace my 7.3 with a 2004 6.0. Sure wish I had my 7.3 back. I have replaced dash cluster along with several things related to water (excess of 2.K dollars) and the fuel injector sensor that ran 1.K dollars). Otherwise, I love driving it. Purchased it one month after I got the wife a new car and it has 148.K and hers has 29.K so you can see what we ride even to Church.

I have an 04 F350 4x4 Crew with the 6.0 and have nearly 90K miles. I have not had a single issue with it and I tow heavy! The key for the 6.0 is to not let it idle. Too much idling builds up soot and then you have issues. Why people let modern diesels regardless of make idle is beyond me given they aren"t hard to start in the cold any more; mine starts at 10 below without being plugged in (don"t recommend doing it often). All that said, I would not buy an 03, unless you get the OASIS report and verify that the engine has the latest updates.

Built Ford tough.

My son"s is sitting on blocks right now and he is driving my Dodge. I tried to tell him when he bought that POS...having made that mistake myself several years ago.

Pisses me off when they won"t listen but come to old dad to bail them out of their folly.

I just love how you Ford folks tell everybody how great your truck is and then list half a dozen major components that have been replaced....warranty or otherwise. How can you call that reliable service?!!!!!

The best warranty ever written is one you never have to use.

Thats What a ford with a Cummins can do for you at a truck pull. Full Pulls and nothing but.

You are exactly correct, and I am a Ford man. My biggest problem with any new truck, bar any brand and I have been around the Duramax and the Dodge with the Cummins is I have a 1988 Ford F250 that I bought new with the 7.3 Diesel in it, I can work on it but you have to have computers to work on new trucks. But the problem is people started buying the diesel trucks to drive as cars because it was"COOL" Yes my truck does not have the power your new truck does but with a banks torbo kit on it and 500000 miles without an overhaul, have replaced two injector pumps, one water pump and two starters! Find me any new truck with that longevity! I don"t care what brand. Before you start badmouthing, remember I am talking about a 20year old truck still running.

I haven't heard to many good things about em. Friends '03 6.0l pickup is in the shop right now for $2800 in sensor and fuel pump repairs. And that is after having both heads reworked by ford to the tune of $10k before the warranty ran out. I hate to trash em, but I think Ford dropped the ball on that motor. I have a '95 7.3 w/ 248k on it and a '96 145k on it. And I USE EM! Never done a thing inside either one. My diesel mechanic friend pretty well told me to stay away from the 6.0l. They've just had to many problems.

Ford doesnt own Cummins. If they
did, Im sure there wouldnt be an Interntional engine in the Superduty truck, especially after all the contract fiascos between Ford and Internatioanl.

DO NOT buy a 2003 6.0 liter.

'04 and newer there were very little problems.

As with anything as soon as you start making more power than stock other components will start to show problems, doesn't matter if it is a Cummins or Dmax.

I have an 06 with 50,000 miles that has never given any problem or been back to the dealer. However, I put a water bypass filter on when it was new, I never let it idle, I change both fuel filters every 15,000 miles (as recommended), I clean the egr valve every 15,000 miles and there are no modifications of any kind. The 05 and newer were the best but lots of the older ones never gave any trouble either. Get an Oasis report and if it's had a troubled history walk away. If you plan to make lots of short trips, don't buy a diesel. In fact, don't buy a diesel unless you plan on lots of heavy pulling.

The '03's are the most suspect. Even most of those are good, however. The 6.0 got better and better, and by mid-'05 they were perfect. My best bud has one with 139,000 on it, most of which is pulling a 24' livestock trailer and it has been marvelous. Gets better mileage than my '01 7.3 and has more power too. (Both have the 3.73 rear gear.)

I didn't say I was a Ford guy. I just stated the luck my friend has had. I also know that changing the Ford-specific parts to the Navistar parts is good for a few horse and a little fuel economy. As for durability I doubt those parts would make much difference. I know Dwight's truck is fairly nice, it rides OK, and does pretty much anything he asks of it, and it was coming up on 60 or 70K when I was working for him 3 years ago. Can't complain much about that can you?

I'd be tough for Ford to drop the IH motor as Navistar also builds the F-650/750/850 for them. It's the NGV that Navistar caught flack about from the unions when they built the plant for it in mexico.

Around home after Ford came out with the 6.0's the only place you can trade a Ford diesel off to is to a Ford dealer. We changed to old Dodge saying to " Buy Ford die with a Ford". Around home the only way you can get a good price out of a used Ford truck is trade it for an other Ford.
