Gasket Material

Anyone know if .010 gasket material is available in auto stores?

Specifically, [judging from the other side of the rear retainer] I'm guessing it's a Vellumoid gasket (crank case, so it just needs to resist engine oil at say 212 F; if that); I was just going to cut one for this [seems to be a hard one to find for a 22-36], and realized everything I have on hand is .030 whichwould shift the crank back .020.

How about a good substitute? I could cut a ring of heavy paper to the outside of the bolt pattern [to set the thickness] and run a bead of blue RTV inside this, but seems a bit hokey.

Thanks!

Some folks may think I'm crazy, but Blue RTV workes even better if you think on these terms.

Make your gasket out of the Blue RTV like normal. But do not tighten anything down, instead stick a small nail just in a tiny bit. Or use anything to keep it seperated a 1/8 th of a inch or even more in some cases. Let it dry for 24 hrs, remove nails, and then tighten it down. You now have a thicker compressed gasket that can take expansion or contraction.

If you tighten it down right away you basickly have little or no gasket left.

I learned this from a old mechanic, and seems to work well, and if you think about it it does make sence.

Permatex #2 can take up small amounts of clearance if you get close on tolerances with paper or other material. Use an even spread on all sides of gaskets & let it set up for a short amount of time.

felpro makes a 1/64" thick paper. part number 3045 is a 12x36" sheet.
1/64"=0.01563"
