Farmall H hydraulic fluid

I just bought a Farmall H and want to use some of my son"s equipment. My questions is the fluid in the H is 30 weight oil and my son"s tractor is hydraulic fluid, can I change the oil to hydraulic fluid and not ruin the H. Thanks.

It won't hurt the liftall, but since hyd fluid is more like SAE 10, it may leak, may not.

I always used a 10 wt. non detergent oil in my old H's & M's, no problems. I always thought that was the recommended fluid for them.

Actually I don't think the operator's manual gives a recommendation, it just says "oil", and not to use old crankcase oil. Since hyd oil was not around in the early years, the assumption was to use engine oil. We used 30 because that is what we used in the engine (warm climate). If someone comes up with an early recommendation from IH in print, I would like to see it. For the Cub, SA, and C the early recommendation WAS 10, before they developed touch control fluid, then hytran.

Thanks for the fast replies. That will set my son"s mind at ease that I will not ruin jis tractor.

Thanks again.

CNKS, think you are right. Real early ones don't even show a liftall. I'm guessing instructions may have came with the attachment at one time. 1949 operators I have lists no oil type. Have SM dated 2-13-53 that lists sae 30 above 80 degrees, sae 20 from 80 to 32 and sae 10 below 32. Some operator manuals have a updated supliment for engine oil that superseeds prevoius oils listed in manuals. I don't have any but probably some around for hydraulic oil also.

All HyTran is, is regular "motor" oil with a special set of additives.

Unless the oil in the H is really nasty, quite frankly I wouldn't even bother changing it. What little cross-mixing you'll get would hardly make a difference even if the oils were incompatible.

The few cups of SAE30 you'll end up with in the hydraulic fluid is hardly cause for alarm. Won't hurt a thing.

What was recomened at the time was straight 30 wt non detergent oil. A lot of guys use Hytrans, but there is straight 30 Non Detergent in mine. On cold days it doesn take longer for the boom pole to go down , but that is the only problem.
