M Farmall ?????

I have 2 questions for you farmall guys. I just got an M and I am having firing problems. It will occassionly fire. Sometimes when you first engage the starter it will fire once then no more. It is set up on a `12 volt system. The secound question is on the right side where you pour in the oil there are a couple of arms and there is nothing hooked to mine. What are they for? Thanks,

The arms are for a radiator shutter system (probably gone) that raised engine temp for use with distillate fuel.
The running issue could be as simple as setting and cleaning the points. Do not replace components one after another until it runs. The analysis process is best done by thinking about the symptoms. The distributor cap could have condensation or cracks. Try the point adjustment first. If it is a mag, the points are behind the geared rotor mechanism. Note carefully where the rotor is pointing before removing the rotor!. Gap is .013" mag, .020" distributor. JimN

How good is the battery? Are you getting enough voltage to the distribute while the starter is turning?
I am chasing an intermittent electrical problem myself, and I am going to check the voltage next.
Steve.
After it get above 20 degrees.

ongrats on acquiring the M. There are three things these old engines need in order to run. You need fuel, spark, and compression at the proper time. You get all those in the correct sequence and she'll run. Pull the plugs and see if you got good blueish spark rolling the motor over. If you got good constant bluish spark on all 4 cylinders check to see if you have fuel getting to the carb. If there is a fuel supply problem then correct that. Being it pops I suspect the compression is ok but you never know. Go about it systematically and get back to us. If it's electrical it could be any number of things but you gotta go about it one step at a time.
