Mylar or Vinyl

Well, I'm just about ready for decals for the SH. Mylar or die cut? Obviously the die cut are not as close to what was origianlly used but they do look nice and the correct police seem to give a pass on this one (not that I really care about the correct police) What do you think?

Vinyl, I don't worry about an absoultely exact restoration, the vinyl simply looks better and there is nothing between the letters to fade to a whitish color. They are also much easier to apply.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe the originals were Mylar either but rather a water transfer type which would make Mylar a customization also, would it not??

I`m pretty sure you`re correct on that Geoff,I think they were water transfers.Ya know,if a guy wants to be real picky on a true restoration, then we shouldn`t be using our modern paints and clear coats either, cause wouldn`t that be customizing too ??

I'm not so sure that the mylar and the water transfer decals are not basically the same?

I'll throw another thought out there. The currently available mylar decal sets are approved and licensed by Case-IH, which makes them the only version that is LEGAL to use. The manufacture and use of decals without the permission of the copywrite holder is a copywrite infringement and is subject to legal proceedings.

Maple Hunter has sold both kinds for years. If what they sold was illegal, they would have been out of business years ago. I believe that Maple Hunter was the first to sell vinyl cut, not sure of that. I see nothing wrong with legally upgrading a part.

Maple-Hunter sells both mylar and vinyl which ARE liscensed by CNH.

I have bought Vinyl decals from the Fordsonhouse for F-20's that are vinyl and they too were CNH licensed!!

Im currently doing a W-30 orchard and no-one offers vinyl decals for the W-30's, and i will be DAM*ED if i put POS mylar decals on a tractor that rare. I took a set of mylars and had them copied by a local sign shop onto die cut vinyl.

just my .02 on decals

MYLAR IS JUNK!!!

Thanks for answering my question -- I have a Maple Hunter catalog somewhere and I wanted to see if it mentioned the license. I have no objection to mylar when new but after a couple of years, fading to white takes place. I much prefer vinyl and will no longer even consider mylar.

Maple Hunter may have permission to reproduce the decals. I really don't know one way or the other. I do know that John Deere doesn't like anyone using their logo without permission. And yes, they will come after you.

Thas simply because they like to steal from anyone and everyone and say its ok simply because its business, but when it happens to them, they get all in a tizzy.

JUNK DEERE sux

Um, I seriously think you have some sort of problem Rusty. Might want to go visit your doctor. I seriously think you are starting to suffer from some sort of alzhiemers or something man.

"To each his own. It's your tractor."

Exactly what I think of your red and yellow H (or M, I forget which). It's what each person is happy with.

(quoted from post at 18:07:03 01/25/09) To each his own. It's your tractor. I merely pointed out that a CORRECT restoration uses ORIGINAL type decals.

so early H's, M's, and A's had stickers???

better do a little more research, they had water transfers just like the F-series did

With Rusty it wont end. He posted once about manifold studs. Said the ones at Napa werent right, and he got them at the dealer. Then when I asked him what was wrong with the ones at Napa, he said they were out at the time. Im just concerned that since he takes it alittle too serious, and cant seem to come up with a good respomce to a question to back up his answer, he has some sort of problem with his memory.I wrote it off one time to him being stubborn, but after his John Deere post below, I am really somewhat concerned about him.

Each to their own... Mylar is "period correct", vinyl looks nicer... And out there somewhere some one has a PINK Farmall.

Gentlemen, as we are all painfully aware, the only true decals were all made from unobtainium and therefore all others are imposters.....
