Could someone please explain how the gas start diesels worked. WAs there a lever to disengage the intake valve for the gas opetration once you switched over to diesel.
Thank you

On the letter series diesels there were two levers used in the changeover. I believe the number series only used one lever.

On a SMD one lever controls the injection pump (as you don't want diesel being injected when it's running on gas) and also acts like a throttle on diesel. The other lever opens the starting valves (a third valve in each cylinder) and operates a butterfly in the inlet manifold to direct air around or through the carburetor as required. The shaft that the butterfly is on also has an electrical switch attached to engage/disengage the mag/distributor. The starting valve opens to an additional combustion chamber to lower the compression ratio sufficiently for it to run on gasoline. Hope this helps, Sam

I have had a bunch of the letter series and a 400D and a 600D and they all operate the same way. The only difference was on some the handle was moved forward to run on diesel on another it moved back. It served the function mentioned. This includes the stationary units as well.
